Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
i searched for RUS’ thread but the results have disappeared along with his profile :(
as the flames rose to her roman nose and her walkman started to melt…
Ruby – these are the results from the previous polls. Unfortunately, I only have the top 10 for the RUS poll, as his list of results disappeared with the closing of his account (does anyone else have the top 20 from that list?). Also, there may be some ties with votes at the botton of both, which I am not aware.
Adam Cook’s 2009 The Auteurs poll top 20:
Citizen Kane
2001: A Space Odyssey
8 ½
The Rules of the Game
Seven Samurai
The 400 Blows
Vertigo
The Passion of Joan of Arc
The Godfather
Rashomon
Stalker
Taxi Driver
La Dolce Vita
Raging Bull
Apocalypse Now
Casablanca
Dr. Strangelove
Bicycle Thieves
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Breathless
RUS’ Mubi Sight & Sound poll 2011 (top 10 only):
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. 8 1/2
3. Persona
4. Vertigo
5. Mirror
6. Seven Samurai
7. Apocalypse Now
8. Citizen Kane
9. In the Mood For Love
10. Sunrise
As anyone can see, outside of The Passion of Joan of Arc – which was nearly in the final until she got burned – the current version is completely different.
wow! these look like the list we started with! this was a great method as not a single one of those films remains. joan really hung on tho, gotta give her credit.
thx, oxy =Dyes, the fact that this list in no way resembles the sight & sound polls is a very good thing.
In case anyone is curious, here’s what we started with in DiB’s poll, before films were voted off (a little more than 20, due to ties at the end):
Vertigo 40
Taxi Driver 38
2001: A Space Odyssey 37
The Mirror (Tarkovsky) 33
8 ½ 33
Seven Samurai 33
Sunrise 32
Apocalypse Now 32
Citizen Kane 31
The Godfather 30
Pierrot le Fou 30
The Godfather Part II 29
The Passion of Joan of Arc 29
The Rules of the Game 29
Pulp Fiction 27
Persona 27
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly 27
Blade Runner 25
Playtime 25
Rear Window 25
Sansho the Bailiff 25
The Third Man 25
The Shining 25
Can Sansho hang in there? Otherwise, a totally different final result from where this started.
Age Of The Earth +2
A Brighter Summer Day +2
Day of Wrath is a very weak film. I’d pick any other Dreyer I’ve seen over Day Of Wrath.
Quit whining and blaming every person in the world who doesn’t agree with you or has more than you for your own problems. There are people on this board from worse off countries than Greece and they don’t call somebody a fucking moron every third sentence.
Sansho the Bailiff + 2
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors + 2
The Third Part of the Night – 1
Celine and Julie Go Boating – 1

A Brighter Summer Day +2
Harakiri -1
Woman in the Dunes -1
Life of Oharu is my favorite Mizoguchi. I wish I would have supported it more . . . How about everyone else? Is it Sansho? Ugetsu maybe?
A Brighter Summer Day +2
Celine and Julie Go Boating +2
3 Women -1
We Won’t Grow Old Together -1
Harakiri -1
Charulata -1
Sansho is my favorite Mizoguchi. That ending destroys me every time. It’s moved up an amazing net +19 this round so far and is in 4th place now according to my tally. Basically, the following films are locks for the top 20 now because their pointage is so far above the bottom 2 (10 points or more above):
A Brighter Summer Day
The Cameraman
Celine and Julie Go Boating
City of Pirates
Harakiri
A Man Escaped
Sansho the Bailiff
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
The Third Part of the Night
3 Women
We Won’t Grow Old Together
Woman in the Dunes
Voting for or against them only adjust their final positions. The rest of these have a chance of falling off, albeit slim for some:
The Age of the Earth
Charulata
The Cloud-Capped Star
Death in the Land of Encantos
The Executioner
Jeanne Dielman, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
Once upon a Time there was a Singing Blackbird
Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks
These two are currently in last place:
La Cienaga
Yeelen
DiB, thanks so much for putting the tremendous effort into this game that you did. Lesser mortals would have folded long ago. I know because I tried to keep a tally on about a dozen films at any given time (once some dropped I would add replacements to monitor) and that alone was time consuming. It was a lot of fun, and whatever the final tally, given the last 22, we will end up with a fabulous and eclectic final 20 that combines some great canon works with unsung films and some downright obscure works.
^people should support La Cienaga.
Just because people don’t think women should direct movies doesn’t mean an exception can’t be made here. If the Academy can do it, surely Mubi can. :)

“Life of Oharu is my favorite Mizoguchi. I wish I would have supported it more . . . How about everyone else? Is it Sansho? Ugetsu maybe?”
Ugetsu is by far my favorite Mizoguchi. So ghostly and ephemeral, surreal and emotional, love how its shot, love the stories, love the acting, love the contrast between the women and the men characters, every little bit of that movie I love to death. Sansho is a fine piece of work and I vote for it because I hold Mizoguchi in high regard, but it wasn’t a my-breath-taken-away-every-second movie like Ugetsu was for me.
And yes I never got an opportunity to vote for Ugetsu during this game. Oh well.

To quote Javier:
No negative votes this time.
I’m sparing the poor bailiff, because of all his special pleading :)
Wait a minute… YOU BURNED HER AFTER YOU USED HER (re poor Joan) hahaha!
I have enjoyed your funny comments, DiB, which has helped keep this in the light vein that it should be considered. Thanks for organizing and tallying this fun event. Got me posting on the site – which may or may not be a good thing.
With this coming to a thankful close, I don’t want to belabor the canon/non-canon argument again. Points have been made pro & con (and are still being made – ha!) on this score. Although all of us will be sad to miss some of our favorites from this list, it does show we can come up with something quite different than the two previous versions of a site poll by Adam Cook and RUS.
