+2 Once Upon a Time there was…….
+2 The Cameraman
-1 La Cienaga
-1 Celine and Julie
-1 Third Part of the Night
My head is spinning, what has been going on with the Sansho love? The Cameraman, Woman of the Dunes, 3 Women, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, all seem to be doing well. All very good, Buster Keaton is great, though i prefer some others by him, and for Paradjanov, Colour of Pomegranates is my favourite.
So,
Sansho the Bailiff +2
Yeelen + 2 (for Africa)
A Man Escaped -1 (very good but i’m not a fan of Bresson generally)
The Age of the Earth -1 (wish it had been another Rocha)
I’ll spare the others, i’ve previously voted down a few, but it’s a strong line-up.
hope Blackbird makes the cut, and big love to Celine + Julie too. Juliet Berto was such a tragic young loss, so vivacious and lovely in the film.
Blwyddyn Newydd Dda to everyone, and huge thanks to Polaris for all the incredible work- i’m busy totting up for the short films poll and that’s hard work, never mind months of it!
The Executioner +2
Once upon a Time there was a Singing Blackbird +2
The Age of the Earth -1
La Cienaga -1
Jeanne Dielman, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles -1
3 Women -1
After firing Joan of Arc and Andrei Rublev I think the work is done. This round is just cruelty.
Seen 21/22, none of them among my all-time favorites but only one that I really hate.

For anyone who’s interested, I created a tournament bracket of the top 32 films from this game just to see how this game would play out in a different format:
http://netbrawl.com/bracket.php?bracketid=789
That’s that, guys.
In the meantime, you could check out my top 25 best (of 2011) list if you’re interested.
What a challenge…. _
I missed the last round due to family issues. Fortunately my last darling made the cut.
Thanks for the hard work.

Kobayashi and Teshigahara take the top spots for Japan. My #1 and #3 favorite Japanese directors respectively. Looks like Mizo is in as well (gotta see more from him). I’ll drink to that!
