Goodluck DiB! :)

so we have one week break to find some of these films! stay safe, our fearless leader!

and if we’re taking sides here i am still with nathan and santino. otherwise all the six hour films will rise to the top. this is a busy time of year for me and there’s just no possible way (tho i still won’t be voting against them). i can’t be the only one whose crunch time is the holiday season. i haven’t had time to watch anything but shorts all week :(

i will find the pialat; i am determined on that xD

Yes, Ruby, you should see the Pialat; it’s a fantastic film.

I’m going to check out Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks over the next week. But if it’s not worth the 9 hours of my life that it’s going to require, there’s going to be absolute HELL TO PAY.

everyone should check out Once Before I Die (instead of voting it down without seeing) its link is on page 204 of the first polaris top 20 thread

Polaris is gone???

The game is suspended? We can be polite to each other again?

Goddammit NO!!! We CAN’T be nice to each other again, you piece of SHIT!!

Z. Bart, it’s all very well to not vote down films you’ve not seen, but what about when we get to the point where users have not seen any film on the list? I do agree with you, but when we reach, say, the top 100, I’ll bet there will be users (who have been a part of this game) in this situation – especially with the way the top 20 is looking just now.

What if the only films a user has seen on the list are films he/she loves? In this case, the -1s become less about getting rid of films one does not like and more about getting rid of films one is indifferent about. I’m not in this position, but if it came down to a -1 between, say, The Apartment (a film I’ve seen and love) and Eros Plus Massacre (a film I’ve not seen and hence have no opinion about), I think it’s more intuitive to give the -1 to the latter.

If there are users in this position, I would actually support such -1s.

“Polaris is gone???”

Good lord I hope this isn’t the type of place where leaving for a week makes people start reading newspapers for obituaries.

Or taking a vacation is a personal slander.

(Because in the second case, it is. It really is. You guys forced this on me. If you had been better children, I wouldn’t have had to leave).

I don’t blame you Polaris. Tallying the results daily would make my head explode.

In that case either watch some of the remaining films or stop voting completely – everything else doesn’t make much sense!

^ There are many films on the list which are difficult/expensive to access. Yeah, the users could just leave the game, but it’s probably more fun to take part ;)

I guess I just don’t see the big deal (at least not any more – it would be different about 20 rounds ago).

Have a good vacation, DiB! I’d say you’ve more than earned it!

Yeah, it’s starting to get to that point for me. And I’m not crazy about the partial votes rule, as I could be unintentionally giving -1s to a film I actually like. I wish I could trade in my negative votes for 1 extra positive vote.

And have a great vacation Polaris!!! Hope there’s lots of sun/snow/whatever-your-weather-preference-is :)

Vacation? Then I’d like to change my vote and bring Hana-bi back:

Hana-bi +2

Polaris -1
December vacations -1

Santino

I’ve come to the conclusion that Polaris’ “vacation” is really just a vacation from this thread, so he can focus large amounts of time writing extended comments in other threads.

It’s sort of like when your parents drop you off at your grandparents house because they are going on a “business trip” for the weekend, which is just code for “we need a break from you kid”.

As always DiB, Kudos to you, if anyone needs a break…

I’d forgotten to say thanks for everything in this game so far, Polaris – I only imagine how much effort you must have put in. Now cherish those precious seven days!

Best wishes, DiB.

Dormancy can breed rejuvenation or degradation, so we’ll see. There may be confetti, or merely ash upon your return.

I’m going to watch as many films as I can, but if we come to a point where I haven’t seen any of those left and can’t yet find a way to, I will absolutely stop voting. You can’t cast votes blindly, it’s absurd. The reason I look at lists in the first place has always been to find things to watch- that I may not have heard of and that someone who’s seen enough films to be making lists in the first place sees as worth pointing out. The people who have seen the more obscure films in the top have most likely also seen the canon films already, then done further searches of their own. Their perspective (I’ve found) tends to be more informed naturally by having a wider scope of reference. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen a list with anything on it I haven’t seen, which is what makes this one so valuable! I have a new guide to search through realms I hadn’t been aware of and that’s exciting to me. The more you see, the more you can learn, the way you look at film can change, and you may even come to appreciate films you love all the more. I think the list shouldn’t be about asserting yourself or winning the way many are treating it, but exposing what’s underrepresented/worth checking out.

Tonight I am playing von Trier catch up before I see Meloncholia. The Element of Crime is in the on deck circle. Is that one on this list? If I like it, maybe I can vote for it when DiB returns.

Santino

I hope not. The Element of Crime is not a very good film (especially amongst von Trier’s other films).

Santino

Going off the logic of the people who say it’s ridiculous to vote down films you haven’t seen, I guess what I should have done is list Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo on my original list then voted for it every day. Since no one else has seen it (and therefore wouldn’t be allowed to vote against it) except me, it would’ve risen to the top and stayed there indefinitely.

That would’ve been a fool-proof way of keeping Fincher here after Zodiac fell off the boat.

Yeah, that makes a LOT of sense…geez.

Nathan M...

If you had done that, Santino, I would’ve vote for Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo every day. Oh man, that would’ve been hilarious.
