I think there’s some heresy in there, too. That movie ranks as one of the worst things a good director has ever done. A true abomination.

There are more than a couple of Coen brothers films I’d put below it.

BTW this poll is insane. There are a million good films that are just getting totally assassinated.

Really weird.

Really? Like what? I realize that most people here do not like Intolerable Cruelty (though I personally think it is good for what it is). But aside from that one I can’t think of anything they’ve done even close to being as bad as (or worse than) The Ladykillers.

ROUND FIFTY THREE

Paris, Texas and The Red Balloon met their end today, which in their aloneness on being voted down probably has made serial killers of heartbroken Mubites out there today. But anyway,

A total of 31 unused partial votes takes down The Apartment, Syndromes and a Century, The Shop around the Corner, Red Psalm, This Transient Life, and Paisan. I’m sure they too will be missed, though the bite is a little less.

All about Lily Chou-Chou was left at the bottom, and drops. I KNOW that’ll be missed. The next five get -1s.

On Holy Mountain, I should clarify.

I don’t really hate Holy Mountain, in fact I enjoyed most of it. However, both it and El Topo do the same really obnoxious thing I don’t like: end, and then continue running for another 45 minutes. I know that the idea of criticizing a movie for being too long or too short is anathema here, that the idea itself results in close scrutiny and conversation about auteur’s intentions and audience expectations and the time-based aspect of the medium itself, but the thing is, when The Dark Knight ends and then decides to tack on an extra two acts, at least the reversal follows a directed thematic element of how the symbolism of the characters themselves are up to attack and destruction at any given turn of events, which comes to par in the final act. And despite all of that, I barely forgave that movie for running on after its clear endpoint.

Just as you can see the line where Mulholland Dr. changes from a television series to a feature length movie, you can see the line in both El Topo and Holy Mountain where Jodorowsky goes, “And if anybody’s still with us at this point, I might as well just keep the drug-binge going.” And the second time, he was funded to do it because John Lennon thought it was cool story, bro, not particularly because of other midnight movie successes like Night of the Living Dead that despite its campiness actually meant something and Pink Flamingos which was honest about its “Let’s see if you’ll sit through this” and other movies that had their social or political element. Jodorowsky just liked going out in the desert with drugs, midgets, and a camera. I feel like his popularity is the art-house equivalent of the stoners who watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for the wrong reasons.

Which is Ari’s criticism of Koyaanisqatsi, ironically, so that just goes to show how differently people can perceive different things. I give Jodorowsky kudos for gaining the respect that he has and Sante Sangre isn’t as bad (mostly because it doesn’t last as long), and I have an off-hand suspicion that Fando & Lis may be pretty good simply because it seems like his movies are good in bits and pieces, just not 2 1/2 to 3 hour epics of “Well and now I’m bored with the desert, let’s start dousing someone in honey and then make a completely different movie to tack on to the ending.”

And I mean come on. I already struggle with how Werner Herzog and Francis Ford Coppola and so on have destroyed animals, forestry, and sometimes people to make their crazy-ass imaginations come to life, but at least they have something resembling focus and a point. Look at how many animals Jodorowsky slaughters in his movies, and for what? So that John Lennon can feel a good vibe, man?

Edit: and on the flipside, I do have a fondness for basically any movie where the director goes, “Fuck it, I do whaddiwant!” and just exults. So there’s that.
