" I should not have brought it up again, sorry, no more alleged cannon or alleged anti cannon talk in 2012"
Mubi’s 2012 New Year’s resolution?
sure is
I made a list of 20 resolutions and am adding that one starting now
I always make at least 20 that way I feel compelled to finish at least 5.
my other mubi resolution is to do write ups on the work of Melvin Van Peebles and James Felix McKenney (you have been warned).
Exciting!
Seduction (1929) +2
Once upon a Time there was a Singing Blackbird +2
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors -1

Moderated
ROUND SIXTY EIGHT
No vote downs. -1 to all. No drops.
69 tallies take out Veredas, Train of Shadows, Satantango, The Sound of the Mountain, Ride Lonesome, Los Olvidados, A Moment of Innocence, and The Human Condition. I’m really glad I’m doing these things as the movies are collectively acquiring hitherto unseen heights otherwise.
A Tale of Tales drops. Goodbye animation. You’re so underrepresented in the cinephile world. Anyway, -1 to the next five, and
29 titles left?

Did it? I’m glad.
Which ones are you referring to? I certainly know my Frames of Reference thread died right quick.

This is pretty much sure to be a great list now. I’ve seen 20 of the last 29 and 8 are in my ‘favourites’. Much better than I expected. Well done everyone. :D

The Passion of Joan of Arc, Sansho the Bailiff and Andrei Rublev for the final 20 – ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME??? (to paraphase an esteemed member…:). These are all in the top 100 on TSPDT?
Thanks to Angel for earlier showing us the current TSPDT standings for some of these top runners. In this game, it’s death to the already canonized film – damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
Mubi resolutions:
1. Don’t ever get into a pointless, circuitous argument with anyone here.
2. Never impose my own rather questionable tastes/attitudes on others too forcefully – take ’em or leave ’em.
3, Show a little respect to anyone who takes the effort to post here and give them some leeway. (Hey, were all in this together).
4. Have fun and never take this site, comments, aspersions, slings and arrows, opinions, too seriously.
I’ll probably break all these soon, but that’s the way I feel today. New beginnings for 2012.
The Third Part of the Night +2
Shadows of our Forgotten Ancestors +2
3 Women +2
Jeanne Dielman, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles +2
Good luck. That’s my resolution for several years here and I lapse often and have to restart my patience from the beginning.
I only really seriously break the first resolution unwittingly, though. The rest of them I can usually tell when I’m starting to become the dick.

Dennis Brian
“I don’t understand why people are so surprised when obscure films are the focus on Mubi. There are 50,000 internet forums where you can talk about popular films, and 1 where you can talk about obscure ones.”
I guess in part because the forums and mubi film popularity list reflect a bit differently. We rarely discuss any of the films in this top 20 and likely never will here.
“Do you really think people are picking obscure films over mainstream films just because they are obscure? That if Transformers were a niche film by an unknown director, Mubi would be singing its praises?”
some would
This is an argument that comes up almost once a month (for various reasons). I should not have brought it up again, sorry, no more alleged cannon or alleged anti cannon talk in 2012
