Jazz – What is Night Fishing? Never heard of it.
@Santino
It’s a short film by Park Chan-wook and Park Chan-kyong. (I think I told you to see it if you saw it at any of the film festivals in L.A.). Not sure if it’s your cup-of-tea, but if you liked Uncle Boonmee Recalls His Past Lives, I thought this something similar, only better.
Oh that’s right. Now I remember.
My updated Top 5:
1. Absentia
2. The Myth of the American Sleepover
3. Burning Palms
4. Martha Marcy May Marlene
5. Road to Nowhere
My Official top 30-something list will be released December 31st though there are still plenty of films I won’t see until January.
A lot of blockbusters were well handled. These aren’t perfect movies, but they’re pretty damn entertaining-
Super 8 – Entertaining, but it tried to hard to recreate E.T.
13 Assassins
Thor
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Hobo with a Shotgun
X-Men: First Class – Couldn’t have been cast better, but they’ve got to start giving mutants better powers.
Insidious – Great scares and build-up, the first half was particularly great. Only a 1 mil. budget.
Drive
The King’s Speech
Fast Five – best one so far
Bridesmaids – I didn’t think women could be funny.
Scream 4 – It was as good as the 2nd scream, it was just cool seeing all the old cast again
Fright Night – This is the best way Fright Night could have possibly been remade. It’s perfect, and I am a huge fan of the original.
Let downs-
Captain America: The First Avenger
Priest
The Rite
The Ajustment Bureau
Some I rate highly than others at this point, in no particular order (some belong to 2010 but were released this year where I live):
Another Year
Certified Copy
Le Havre
Tyrannosaur
Melancholia
Snowtown
At the bottom :
There are several that are so-so to me like Midnight in Paris or the Skin I Live In but I wouldn’t say they are bad. Only one that I strongly disliked (partly based on my fondness of Il Divo, hence, the disappointment):
This Must Be The Place.
Ah, and Bridesmaids, although I’m not quite sure about this one because I quit after 20 minutes.
http://mubi.com/lists/films-of-2011—8 I have a list here with a few award stuff going on. If you’re too lazy to click that, here are my top and bottom fives…
Top…
1. The Tree of Life – Malick
2. Faust – Sokurov
3. Drive – Refn
4. Alps – Lanthimos
5. Silver Bullets – Swanberg
Bottom…
60. Bad Teacher – Kasdan
61. Zookeeper -Coraci
62. 30 Minutes or Less -Flesicher
63. One Day – Scherfig
64. The Smurfs – Gosnell
Nothing too crazy there I don’t think. Joe Swanberg having a film in the top 5 maybe, and Lone Scherfig who has a couple of films (Italian for Beginners and An Education) that have done fairly well being in the bottom five (although I have not seen those films) might be a tiny surprise…
I liked The Smurfs as a kid as well :(.
Another Year is from another year
The Kings Speech? maybe it will win best picture two years in a row!
@American Water Gummo Yeah, I know Uncle Boomnee came out last year, but I saw it this year in the theater. But, you’re right, it’s last year. I don’t know. I guess it’s how films sort of overlap by more than a year being shown all over the place like seeing Oscar nominated films at the end and the start of every year.
I love these 10 film so far…

10. Midnight in Paris
Still have lots to see, I’m excited to see The Turin Horse, Sleeping Beauty, Dangerous Method, Shame, Carnage.
I haven’t seen enough bad movies to make a top 5 but personally I never really saw the point in ranking ‘worst’ movies to begin with.
I haven’t seen more than about 20 films released this year so…
1. Meek’s Cutoff
2. Everything else. (nothing too special here, except for Super 8)
I think 2011 is been a great year for cinema since there’s so many good films to watch. After watching so many brilliant films, at least in my opinion, here are my favorite films so far and I consider them as the best of 2011. But the list isn’t fixed yet, since I still need to watch several other films.
1. The Kid With A Bike
2. A Separation
3. The Skin I Live In
4. Certified Copy
5. Le Quattro Volte
I don’t have any worst films list so far because, as I recall, all films I’ve watched are rather satisfying as cinematic experience. Or perhaps I just tend to avoid any films with possibility as being bad, haha.
But here are some films that fail to fulfill my expectation and enthusiasm. Oh yes, expectation kills. I should now better.
1. Martha Marcy May Marlene
2. Meek’s Cutoff
3. Attenberg
Best: so far…
Poetry
Meek’s Cutoff
Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives.
Decendents
Melancholia
Worst:
This is always tough. Do you mean worst as in badly made dreck, some stupid mainsteam flick or a good film that for some reason some people decide not to like because of expectations? I tend to avoid films I am pretty sure will be bad. And my expectations are guarded for almost every movie I see. So I have nothing here.
I’d rather rank my 10 favorites and have no worsts!
1. Hugo
2. Beginners
3. Drive
4. Midnight in Paris
5. The Tree of Life
6. A Dangerous Method
7. Melancholia

Ari
I saw Sweet Little Lies in 2010. It felt a little flat by the end but it’s a nice film up until then. The final act really didn’t work for me though.
