five best: MELANCHOLIA
THE GUARD
THE WARD
A DANGEROUS METHOD
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

the worst:THE TREE OF LIFE (I couldn’t care to watch till the end;boring, stupid and melodramatic)
THE SKIN I LIVE IN (good directing doesn’t prevent the film from being a total dissapointment:camp instead of cinema fantastique)

It is obvious that many movies might be incuded in the worst five, but I just didn’t go to see them;or I feel pointless including a film like CAPTAIN AMERICA. On the other hand, there are many that could easily make it into the list, were it a longer one.TINTIN, THE IDLES OF MARCH, CONTAGION are some that come to mind. There are also, of course, those I haven’t watched, for a variety of reasons (HUGO, for example hasn’t been released in Greece yet). And was Winterbottom’s THE TRIP included in this year’s films? I wasn’t sure or otherwise it would definitely hit it to the top!

Nasty business out of the way first. No film I saw this year (and indeed few films I’ve seen ever) are as profoundly stupid as Zack Snyder’s insipid “Sucker Punch”. “30 Minutes or Less”, “No Strings Attached”, “Your Highness”, and especially “The Hangover Part 2” all seemed soul suckingly un-funny when viewed through the prism of the current boom of American mainstream comedies.

Although I’m far from caught up on the cinema highlights of the year (I currently have copies of “Certified Copy”, “Melancholia”, “Margin Call” and many others waiting for me and plan on taking in “Hugo” in all its 3D glory as soon as I possibly can) I found the following films particularly satisfying.

Honorable mentions:
Moneyball
Bridesmaids
Rango
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Midnight in Paris

Now, on to the top five…
5. Drive
4. Super 8
3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2. The Descendants
1. The Tree of Life

The number one spot was a done deal the minute I finished watching “Tree of Life” for the first time. I cannot foresee anything overtaking it as my favorite of the year and one of the finest cinematic experiences of my life.

A predictable bunch, but my bunch nonetheless.

After a further consideration (re-watched a few films, caught up with a few others) and my list has morphed into the following:

Honorable mentions:
Moneyball
Bridesmaids
Rango
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Super 8
Drive

Now, on to the top five…
5. Midnight in Paris
4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
3. The Descendants
2. Hugo
1. The Tree of Life

I really was not expecting to embrace “Hugo” as much as I did, but I think it’s a true masterpiece, engaging and transporting with the best use of 3D I’ve encountered. It’s really competitive for the number one spot. Those who say this year in film was a lackluster one are merely looking in the wrong places.

This will prob be the final ranking for a long while now!

1. The Tree of Life (Malick)
2. The Turin Horse (Tarr)
3. Shame (McQueen)
4. Faust (Sourkov)
5. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Fincher)

75. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (Ritchie)
76. 30 Minutes or Less (Fleischer)
77. One Day (Scherig)
78. The Smurfs (Gosnell)
79. Desi Boyz ( Dhawan)

Interestingly, my list from 6 months ago feature none of the films above!

For biggest suprises, maybe’ The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ (Fincher), ‘Submarine’ (Ayoade) and ‘Hugo’ (Scorsese). Biggest dissapointments ‘The Lady’ (Besson) and ’A Dangerous Method (Cronenberg).

Well, 2011 was pretty lackluster for me. A few great films, a lot of mediocre ones and a lot of disappointments (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Tinker Tailor, Shame, Super 8).

That said, my top five would probably just be:

5) Melancholia
4) 50/50
3) Midnight in Paris
2) Drive
1) The Tree of Life

Honorable Mentions – Hugo, Attack the Block, 13 Assassins.

Still need to see We Need to Talk About Kevin, Once Upon A Time in Anatolia, Take Shelter, Bellflower, The Turin Horse, Martha Marcy May Marlene, A Separation, Tyrannosaur, The Skin I Live In, and a handful of others that don’t get widely distributed.
