Let’s take a trip back…
Orson Welles’s Harry Lime in The Third Man.
The shark in Jaws.
Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
The Monster in Frankenstein
The Bride in The Bride of Frankenstein
Kong in King Kong.
5. Victor Frankenstein in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, I love that moment when we see the deformed mask get pulled off and Peter Cushing emerge from underneath.
4. Quint in Jaws, sorry Neil’s Brother, the shark is great but when Quint shows up at the back and scratches his nails on the chalkboard that just kills me.
3. Alien in Alien, Harry Dean Stanton shouldn’t have gone looking for that cat, that’s all I’m saying.
2. Harry Lime in The Third Man.
1. Harry Powell in The Night of the Hunter, amazing.
Of course Orson Welles in The Third Man. I don’t know if I’ve seen anything cooler.
I love the introduction into Guido, played by Marcello Mastroianni, on 8 1/2. Fellini goes to pains to hide his face, and then he brings it into full view in a rack-focus shot in the bathroom mirror, complete with detestedly black eyes.
Also, I think that Peter Lorre has a great entrance on M, with that eerie-arse whistling.
Mia Wallace’s introduction is fantastic on Pulp Fiction.
Also, Veronique’s introduction, or, at least, the first time you see her, in The Double Life of Veronique, is fantastic, with Weronika just standing on the sidewalk, absolutely confused and not knowing what the hell is going on.
Those are just some great ones. Of course there are more, though.
Savvy
obviously,
the adult Kane during Thatcher’s part of the story.
The one that instantly came to mind was the opening zoom out in Clockwork Orange.
The opening of Raiders of the Lost Ark and the slow reveal of Indiana Jones. Truly iconic.
Absolutely Ryan! and Joshua…I totally forgot about the Alien stomach burst!!!
Henry Fonda as Frank in Once Upon a Time in the West.
Bela Lugosi as Dracula at the top of the stairs with his children of the night line.
Klaus Kinski in the Great Silence.
Delphine Seyrig in Daughters of Darkness.
and the young Kane framed in the window from, of course Citizen Kane.
Best subtle intro – Alain Delon as Jef Costello in Le Samurai
There are two great ones in Lawrence of Arabia:
Anthony Quinn … Auda abu Tayi
Omar Sharif … Sherif Ali
Harry Lime
Indiana Jones
Jane Russell in Gentlemen’s Prefer Blondes -Vavooommmmm!!!!!!!
how bout:
Tina Carlyle – The Mask
Jessica Rabbit – Who Framed Roger Rabbit
;)
Jessica Rabbit. Nice.
The Motorcycle Boy (mickey rourke) – Rumble Fish
hmmm…lemme take a stab at this:
Dr. Frankfurter in Rocky Horror Picture Show
Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark
Henry Jones, Sr. in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade “Junior?” “Yes sir!” right after he hit him in the head with a fucking vase…classic
Darth Vader in Star Wars
Hmmm…I just watched Downfall and the first time that Hitler comes into frame it is rediculous. The actor looks just like him! incredible film, up there with Saving Private Ryan
In no particular order:
Jack Sparrow (the film that made me certain that Johnny Depp has a clause in his contract that he has to have the best entrance in any film)
I’ll second Dr. Frankfurter and Jessica Rabbitt—classics!
Tyler Durden—any one of the five times that you see him first.
and John Hurt in The Proposition
Tyler Durden haha
1) Orson Welles as Harry Lime/The Third Man
2) John Wayne as Ringo Kid/Stagecoach
3) Max Schreck as Nosferatu
4) Charles Laughton as The Hunchback of Notre Dame
5) Lana Turner as Cora/The Postman Always Rings Twice
6) Kong in King Kong (1933)
7) The Apes in Planet of the Apes
The Man With No Name in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, becuase it’s not only badass and supercool, he’s not dressed in the poncho- it makes me like the poncho more- and it sets up the tumultuous relationship between him and Tuco.
Colonel Mortimer in For A Few Dollars More, because it again sets up an equal and a dramatic counterpoint to The Man With No Name.
Frank in Once Upon A Time In The West, because again it’s badass, it has the beautiful and haunting score for West by Ennio Morricone.
Alex Delarge in A Clockwork Orange, I liked the composition and symmetry of that zoom out from Alex’s face. I always liked that about Stanley Kubrick’s directorial style.
Btw, I know it’s only four. It’s all I can think of.
>>Dr. Frankfurter in Rocky Horror Picture Show<<
Yes!
Tops of all time: Joan Crawford in RAIN.
Darth Vader – Star Wars
Omar Shariff – Lawrence of Arabia
Marlene Dietrich in “The Devil is a Woman”
Kim Novak in “Vertigo”
Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like It Hot”
Vincent Perez in “Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train”
Tippi Hedren in “Marnie”
Adolph Hitler in “Triumph of the Will”
1. Withnail in Withnail & I
2. Henry in Eraserhead
3. Harry in The Third Man
Charles Bronson w/ harmonica in Once Upon a Time in the West.
Darth Vader / Ben Kenobi / Han Solo / Emperor in Star Wars.
Harry Dean Stanton in The Straight Story
In terms of pure badassness? No. Arnie takes the cake for that one.
Patapon
It has just occured to me that this could be a very interesting thread. Just name a 5 movie characters that made the biggest impact on you when they entered the screen for the first time. And no Arnie is not my #1 choice. I just thought that it sounded like a good subtitle for my Topic.
5 – John Doe – Seven
4 – The Crazy 88 lead by O-Ren Ishii – Kill Bill (I watched this scene about 20 times the day i bought the DVD. It is pure genius)
3 – Hannibal Lecter – The Silence of the Lambs
2 – T Rex – Jurassic Park
1 – The Joker – The Dark Knight (After months hype and extensive buildup the first time we see Heath Ledger in full make-up, especially on the IMAX screen, is an experience of awe and ambitious fascination that very few actors can manifest)
