Finally....

Finally Criterion has started honoring the other master of the subversive, misunderstood and often under financed, Nicholas Ray. The other man of course being, Sam Fuller. Attention Criterion: Please release the one Sam Fuller film that seems to have been ruthlessly overlooked in the realms of cinematic history, “Park Row” from 1952. Rosenbaum listed it in his top 100 films of all time a few years back and I wish it was available to see somewhere! I would also love to see good versions of Nicholas Ray’s, “Johnny Guitar” and “The Lusty Men”, Max Ophuls’ “La Signora Di Tutti” and maybe some late Mizoguchi like “The Crucified Lovers” or “Tales of The Taira Clan” Keep up the good work though! I’d love to discuss The works of these or other great filmmakers so please reply if you’re interested. ;)

Anybody know if the Warner archive release of Party Girl is widescreen?

Such fantastic news. I saw it on the big screen about twelve years ago and would love to be able to watch it again. I’d call it Ray’s masterpiece but my heart belongs to Johnny Guitar and In a Lonely Place.

Yes, Mike, the Warner archive release of Party Girl is widescreen, and the picture quality is very good (what you might see on TCM). You don’t get much else with the DVD as far as extra features go, though—it’s certainly worth a Criterion edition.

Great news! An essential addition to my nascent Nick Ray collection.

On the subject of neglected 50s melodramas…. how about Vincente Minnelli’s The Cobweb?

Memories Of Murder

and while I’m being greedy, howsabout some more Ray: On Dangerous Ground (and early criterion LD!), King of Kings (how good with that scope look in Blu Ray!)

Anthony Mann: El Cid, Man Of The West

Is this the one with James Mason, where he is addicted to some kind of proscription drug?

Yes,

But it is barely about the addiction. It’s an attack on suburban life, a subversion of dominant ideologies in America, and filled with Ray’s usual questions on the intrinsic destruction in masculinity.

Man of the West, hell yes, Mr. Sansone. I will fight with you for that!
