The beginning of a wonderful Yugoslav relationship?

I applaud Criterion for issuing the Makavejev box set in the Eclipse series, as well as a couple of his films in the regular Criterion series. I certainly hope that Criterion will take the opportunity to explore the films of the former Yugoslavia in more detail. It is a particularly rich area. For those who are not already familiar with the film production of the area, it is worth checking out Daniel J. Goulding’s instructive Liberated Cinema: The Yugoslav Experience, 1945-2001, which treats Makavejev and dozens of other directors. One quibble: it is unfortunate that Criterion did not have an expert on the area or a native-speaker from the area proofread the liner notes, as there are some misspellings of the names of the actors in those films.

i concur wholeheartedly. bravo to criterion for not stopping and basically releasing every important film makavejev made.

i also hope criterion will dig deeper into yugoslav cinema. said it before, ill say it again. petrovic’s “the feather collectors” is begging for the treatment.

also agree that criterion should have found some experts of higher quality. liner note mistakes, and also factual inaccuracies. i tried to notify them in a post on their website, but unfortunately, my post was not selected for publication. jebiga.
