Portrait of Jennie (1948) dir. William Dieterle starring Joseph Cotton, Jennifer Jones
Random Harvest (1942) dir. Mervyn LeRoy starring Greer Garson, Ronald Colman
(Btw, I noticed that Random Harvest is not in the database. It should be.)
Also I Know Where I’m Going (1945) dir. Powell/Pressburger starring Wendy Hiller, Roger Livesey
Chaplin’s Midern Times would be a great first date film. Or even City Lights.
Casablanca
Red River (that is if whoever your date is with can put up with westerns)
A Streetcar Named Desire
Irma Le Douce
Th Apartment – actually any Billy Wilder films especially the bigger ones seemed to fit
Night of the Hunter is a good one if she likes horror films.
Monte Carlo
Days and Nights in the Forest
Donkey Skin
The Beast (you know which film I mean…and yes, it worked for me)
Letter from an Unknown Woman
Romeo, Juliet and Darkness
Evdokia
The Cranes are Flying

The Adventures of Prince Achmed

The Nail of Brightness (on a top 5 dating films for sure)
“The Beast (you know which film I mean…and yes, it worked for me)”
i love that idea! and if it’s a woman, buy her one red rose afterwards and wink at her a lot…..
Window Water Baby Moving
After it is finished whisper in her ear “One day, you’ll be going through that for me”
cecil, do you ever get a second date?
Strictly speaking I haven’t had a first date yet…
:(
Singapore Sling
And then gently say to her, “I’ve got a kiwi in the kitchen darling”
Cecil, I fucking love you.
Back on topic:
Howard Hawks’ screwball comedies are great fodder, especially Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday. Also, The Thin Man and its sequels. And I don’t think you can get any more raw heat than the sparks that flew on and off screen between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in To Have And Have Not.
Vertigo
Afterwards kiss her gently, and then say to her “dearest, there are some clothes in my room I’d like you to try on”
cecil, i think you’ve misunderstood either the idea of this thread, or the idea of ‘a date’. for your future, i hope it’s the first.
although the kiwi thing is fine.
Sebastiane
Begin the after-film discussion with “Hopefully you found that as sexy as I did!”
“Strictly speaking I haven’t had a first date yet…”
Awwwwwwww….
I’d try maybe In the Mood for Love, double entendre intended.
Sweet Movie
And then, after it is finished, get down on one knee, get out a wedding ring and ask her “Can you be my purified sanitation system for unchecked waste?”
i’d go for any of these choices. but the kiwi thing is perfect.
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes
“Wanna get some coffee?”
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes
“Y’know, my ideal woman would look like that”
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes
“I’ve got a couple of those in my house”
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes
“Ah, that brought back good memories of how I lost my virginity”
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes
“And you wanted to see The Time Traveller’s Wife…”
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes
“Yep. That’s the kind of shit I’m into”
Fucking hell Cecil, you only bring in the kiwi when you’re on your third date. XD
The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes
“That’s one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen”
when i took psych 101 the prof said that it was more effective to watch a horror movie if you wanted to get laid because of the excitement level that is unique to the genre. but i could see this back firing because some horror movies are almost comedic.
as for what great older movie i would like to see on a first date…? not too sure. i think it depends… would a theater be showing it?
hmmm ‘rear window’. cause its exciting but not obscene. it has obvious elements of voyeurism but its not obnoxious. so even if you’re not that into the date it would still be a good flick to watch in theaters. that makes me kind of conservative i suppose. i don’t know i hate deciding dates.
A Clockwork Orange
“Fancy a bit of in-out-in-out my girl?”
Paper Moon, To Catch A Thief, Breathless, The Big Sleep
The Thin Man or My Man Godfrey
Jack Lineman
A any great older films to see on a first date? Anyone has any ideas becouse I’ve been trying to think of a few.
