I think it’s probably a matter of them both being indebted to a certain degree to Bergman.
I absolutely agree Matt. Both are indebted to a great degree to many Bergman films (especially the middle-period films and perhaps most importantly “Through a Glass Darkly”). But there are other psychological films involving husbands and wives as well. I guess I just meant the specific plot points between “Images” and “Antichrist” that really stood out:
SPOILERS:
1) The connection of the wife’s psychological issues with the miscarriage in “Images” and the death of the child at the beginning of “Antichrist.”
2) The obvious naiveté of the husbands who think they can “cure” their wives through their actions.
3) The strange animals like the deer in “Antichrist” and the head of the antelope in “Images.”
4) The violence of the women with scissors (even though “Antichrist” goes much more graphic and personal).
5) The killing of the husbands in the end.
And many more…

Has anyone already made the obvious connections between these two films (Images and Antichrist)? There are many connections to be made but the most obvious being a woman that’s going crazy being brought out to a “safe” place in the country by her husband where things only get worse for her. There’s a lot more to say, but I was just wondering if anyone else has already written or thought about this. Any thoughts???
