a quick question about luis bunuel

I’ve been mopping up a lot of classics recently and was going to buy Belle De Jour – the only Bunuel film I’ve seen, apart from Un chien Andalou. My question is this: Do I buy Belle De Jour (for $8) or do I splash out on a Bunuel 8 DVD box-set for $40 (which contains Belle De Jour, The Discrete Charm of The Bourgoisie, That Obscure Object of Desire, Diary of A Chambermaid, The Phantom of Liberty, Milky Way, Tristana and The Young One). I like Catherine Deneuve and I did enjoy both Belle De Jour and Un Chien Andalou when I saw them years ago. I’m also a big believer in peresevering with films generally held to be good as rule, so if at first I don’t care for some of them all is not lost. What’s everyone’s views on Bunuel in general and these films in particular?

Those are all great films — Tristana is very hard to find. I’d go for the box.

buy the box. If only for “The Young One”, which is lesser known, but fantastic.

Where did you find it? Online? If so please share the info, I would like to buy it.

Well, if you liked BELLE you owe it to yourself to get the box & explore the other films.

Go for the box. Definitely.

Also, I love Bunuel. One of my favorite directors. But am I the only one who thinks Belle De Jour was his weakest?

I’d go for the box, but first I’d make sure the transfers are of quality. Where is this box from? Korea? Taiwan?

Caveat Emptor on this.

I’m in the UK and it’s online in the UK and also in the shops here. It actually costs £28 (which I think is about $40).

Definitely the boxset. That Obscure Object of Desire, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgoisie are worth the price of admission alone.

Box set. But also see Viridiana, L’age D’Or, the Exterminating Angel, and Simon of the Desert—all Bunuel greats.

This side of the pond it sells for 80 us dollars and up. Plus is a region 2 product.

@Christopher – No I don’t think it’s anything dodgy. Here’s the link if anyone’s interested:

>>am I the only one who thinks Belle De Jour was his weakest?<<
Let’s just say I like Bunuel best when he’s most strange.
