According to Variety Sam Mendes is Directing Next Bond Film

Dennis Brian

This is an awful choice
My hope for Mendes was
that he would keep directing
financial disappointments
until he could no longer get work
and had to beg for a job in the porn industry
Oh well

Witch is a weirder choice:
This, or Michael Apted a few years back?

Dennis Brian

Apted I suppose but I didn’t much care for those either

My choices and this might sound weird

Daniel Barber: He showed you can make an intelligent action drama with Harry Brown

or

Sylvester Stallone: He proved he can direct an action sequence in Rambo and has the ability to make old beloved characters marketable again, Rocky Balboa and Rambo. Plus he is coming off The Expendibles which by the look of things should be an action extravaganza

Pfft screw all those guys … the guy that NEEDS to direct a Bond film is Mike Hodges. I mean really, if he got his hands on a good Bond script he’d revolutionize the series.

Ben Simington

HA! or maybe Cronenberg after his weird-sounding Ludlum adaptation. What? I wanna see Bond pull a bio-mechanical gun out of his spontaneously formed stomach orifice. And finally face some of venereal horror coming his way from all his shenanigans.

Dennis Brian

Cronenberg is a good choice

“and had to beg for a job in the porn industry”

Same thing, it’s action/gadget porn.

Dennis Brian

true in a sense
but if this makes money and it will
then he can impose whatever dull drama he wants on
the viewing public right after

I’m curious why Sam Mendes receives so much hate around here. I don’t really see anyone bashing his films, just him.

Dennis Brian

I hate his films
not him as a person
I’m sure he is a nice guy
he bagged Kate Winslet
and she seems nice

I’m tellin’ you guys, Kathryn Bigelow. Period.

I can’t wait to see the DVD and get some of that Lily Tomlin-esque Huckabees-style rant where Daniel Craig goes of on him.

You can say what you want about the dude, but I think it’s nonsense that don’t let Guy Ritchie take over the franchise.

Dennis Brian

las do u have him confused with david o russell?

guy richie would have been a nice economical choice

Ben Simington

Kathryn Bigelow:
Now THERE is a GREAT idea. POINT BREAK pwnz CASINO ROYALE, in my opinion.

Laszlo Kovacs

@Den, no I don’t have him confused… I’d just like to see Daniel Craig twat him about the way Lily Tomlin did David O. Russell :D There’s too much touchy feel-y in Mendes movies for me to imagine Craig buying into it. He’s looked lost when they’ve asked him to give a shit about something in the two he’s done.

And yes, Bond films will never be particularly interesting so they might as well make as much money as possible. Not that Guy Ritchie has some tremendous track record, but he’s clearly not shy working with stars… and either way, his profile will no doubt be rising as we speak.

Sam Mendes is one of the most bland directors working today. Horrible choice.

Ari

I don’t see what the problem is with Mendes directing a Bond film ever if Mendes’ films are generally awful and most Bond films utterly bore me. Even if Mendes is one of the most bland directors working today, aren’t most Bond films directed by bland directors? Even the better ones are. Hell, he’s far better than either Marc Foster and Martin Campbell. Hopefully, Mendes will get off this Greengrass ripoff trip that derailed with Quantum of Solace. And maybe he can convince Kate to be the Bond girl. I’d kinda love to see that.

Mendes gave us Road to Perdition but his other films can suck my duck.

deckard croix

Yes Robley we all hate Sam Mendes the man, not the filmmaker. We just do, we can’t explain it or justify it. He’s really a wonderful filmmaker but we hate him nevertheless.

This is kind of what I love about the Bond films though. The idea of a host of different directors trying to interpret the story of this one man is very intriguing to me. Mendes would not have been my first choice to direct a Bond film, but then again, Daniel Craig would NEVER have been my first choice to play Bond, and he worked out very nicely.

i think they should have a bond off. MGM should hold a contest where any director who wishes to complete is given certain dialogue and action cues and they have to make a 5 minute short film out of it (think of the BMW short films). then let the public choose the best concept/film. the winner gets to direct the next bond film.

I like the Sam Mendes films I have seen so far so…personally, being a fan of his work along with my love for the Bond series, I was very happy to hear this news. That, and the fact that Peter Morgan is helping with the script, I hope this new Bond defies everyone’s expectations.

i honestly hope they finally start incorporating some of bond’s classic behavior that sean connery brought to the screen. things like intelligence, smoothness and wit. that’s one of the great things about bond. he’s not just suppose to be an action hero, he’s cunning and resourceful. daniel craig is a good bond. i just want to see him do things like what was done in the train scene from russia with love. the part where red grant unknowingly gave himself away by the type of wine he ordered with his meal. bond caught that and automatically knew he was not who he said he was.

Maybe this new Bond movie will be about how James Bond gets a desk job at MI6 and buys a house in the suburbs after getting hitched. Then he realizes it’s all crap.

alejito

Christopher Nolan would’ve done an awesome Bond.
