American film distribution companies and foreign films.

So I’m seated here in front of my computer, trying to search for a unique box set for movies made by one of the greatest directors of all time (ANGELOPOULOS) and it is seemingly impossible. Either they are region 2 encoded dvd’s or region 0 but not with english subtitles on almost the entire collection. This made me think of the lack of distribution that certain, potential American film distribution companies have on their collection. I’m sure that companies like Criterion or Kino try hard to bring the best, but if you spent time for bringing movies like Benjamin Button to the special collection, I would suggest to take that precious time and give it to someone else: let say a box set for Andrei Tarkovsky or at least one for Nuri Bilge Ceylan, etc.; to try and support better the true side of film.

On the other side, I guess is not easy. But i know there is people out there who feel the same way as I do, so please try a little harder, for the sake of the Cinemaphile :-| :). You guys the companies have the money, the monopoly… what else do you need?

Oswaldo, I think most of the people here would agree with you 100%.

I certainly agree with you. A criterion box/eclipse set for Nuri Bilge Ceylan would literally make me explode with excitement.

I don’t know we have to remember Criterion, and Kino are businesses, and must operate as such. I know they will release a film I’m not interested in seeing once in a while, but I also know they will release things like the Hiroshu Shimizu eclipse set (which I have yet to get (goddamn you economy!)), and will more than likely release something from Hou, Ceylan, Angelopoulos, and more from Yang, etc… etc… It’s give and take they make more money so, they can get more obscure titles to us. I’m willing to wait, for now.

yes, what Col. Dax said. it’s a business and i think criterion is as good as it gets . . . and that’s pretty good.
