AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY - WAS IT NOT...?

Gordon Ackerman

I never see anyone here mention “AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY”, circa 1952, directed by my favorite American director, George Stevens (Shane and Giant, among others.)

Was this not one of the best films ever?

Whoops.

Yes. The title of the book from which the film was taken was “An American Tragedy.”

“A Place in the Sun”, indeed.

Sorry.

“And if George Stevens hadn’t used the first sixteen-millimeter color film at Auschwitz and Ravensbrück, undoubtedly Elizabeth Taylor’s happiness would not have found a place in the sun.” —Jean-Luc Godard

Actually, I’m sadder that the Sternberg version of the story isn’t better known.

The Sternberg film is vastly superior over the Stevens and actually one of his best even if it got mutilated.

DAN, ARTHUR and JEAN-LUC:

Are you 200% sure it wasn’t 8mm? Yes, I’ve seen it (the footage, not the camera.).

He carried it in his pocket.

Forgive me but………….I never heard of the “Sternberg version.”

Fill me in, please.

Cheers
