Also, anyone who picks a 17 hour movie because it’s long and you want to live longer is stupid. Don’t answer like that. I’ll euthanize you without hesitation. That reminds me, I’m your nurse in this situation.
Sleepaway Camp.
Can we force there to be a gag reel? Like if I wanted to see the bloopers of a very serious film? End of a happy note after a very depressing but good film? Can that be a condition?
Yes, Paya, we can do that. As your nurse I have that kind of power. I assume you want to see the Schindler’s List gag reel, right?
Daniel, why Sleepaway Camp? You’re forgetting the WHY part.
Easy, as I just saw it and think it would fit in perfectly – Le Feu Follet (the Fire Within (Warning: possible spoiler – though the film does make clear what is going to happen) by Louis Malle. It’s about a man’s last 24 hours before he commits suicide because “Nobody loved him and he didn’’t love enough”. He wants to leave “an indelible stain” by his death. The film ends as he puts the gun to his chest and pulls the trigger. If I were in the situation you describe, that’s the film I would like to go out on – before the credits.
Ah, my mistake – I’d have to say because it’s a great bad film! There’s no gag reel, and as far as last scenes to go out on it’s a great one. If I’ve got to die immediately after I might as well end it all on something that’s not subtle or nuanced. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen Sleepaway Camp, but when I imagine seeing the end and then flatlining, it just seems right.
Oh my! I don’t even think under sarcastic circumstances I could see the gag reel to that film. Something in my stomach would just hurt. I guess that probably would kill me anyway. : ) I guess that would make this scenario very plausible.
I’m going to pick Spirited Away. I don’t even need the gag reel. I would love a last word from Miyazaki, though.
The why is because it would take me out of myself the way most animated films do. But in this case the world would already feel like heaven so I would be ready to leave the earth and go some place else. Some place unfamiliar.
Is that okay, nurse shotzi?
Bob, can we get a spoiler warning on that or something? I’m trying to not read it since I plan on watching that very movie later this week.
Thanks, Daniel. Good answer.
Since you didn’t say a yes or a no on my choice should I assume I need to pick a new one?
I’ve not seen Spirited Away. I’ll watch it with you while you die, and if it sucks I’ll just make sure you die sooner. It sounds like I might enjoy it, though. It’s not Pokemon related is it? I’ve never understood any of that business.
The Proposition. Sun setting on the brothers Burns, “What are you gonna do now?” then I’m gone. I can deal with that, that’s one peaceful and tonally appropriate way to go out.
God no! It is much deeper than that. I’m sure that you would like it! In fact, I promise! ; )
Pokemon has absolutely nothing to do with Spirited Away beyond being Japanese and animated. It’s a good film, as are the other couple Miyazaki films I’ve seen (Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle).
I’m not entirely sure what I’d pick, given that most really good films are downers. I think “Wild Strawberries” would probably be a good choice given the subject matter. But “8 1/2” I like so much that it might be the one. Both of those have endings that would leave me feeling like I’m ready to go.
Shotzi: Spoiler attached to first post. I was going to suggest Satantango as it is about 7 1/2 hours I hear, but saw your post after that warns us against posting long movies just to last a bit longer. If you are to be my nurse, I will stick with the first answer.
Josh, I liked The Proposition. I’d be happy to watch it again while you die.
Paya, that’s a bold promise.
Liz, I didn’t mean to generalize Japanese animation. I was just joking. I am not very knowledgeable about that type of thing, though, that is for sure. I will watch 8 1/2 with you while you die.
Bob, thanks. I’m really looking forward to The Fire Within, that’s why I’m being so uptight about it. I’d be bummed if I read the ending before seeing it.
Sleepaway Camp, Really? Just…………..well, really?
I’m thinking strictly of the question here, Kyle! Think about it: I’m already terminal. Cut down in the prime of life! I could choose from hundreds of classic films, or my favorite films…but I say a ludicrous situation demands a ridiculous movie.
Shotzi: when I’m ready to die I’ll give you a call.
Daniel, that is a fair way of looking at it.
Liz, I wish you a long and healthy life, unless I feel like watching 8 1/2 soon.
Shotzi: no plans on ending my life any time soon, so you might have to wait a little while to see 8 1/2.
Oh I can definitely see the appeal in Sleepaway Camp. It wouldn’t be my choice, but yeah…it’s a good one in my opinion. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for that classic.
just give me the worst movie imaginable, maybe some Ed Wood. then death will be something to look forward to.
“if….”. It just seems fitting to me. It’s a great movie!
Philadelphia Story
Breast meat 2!!!!
This question is so depressing. I think I’ll go for something entertaining like Bringing Up Baby – at least I can die with a smile on my face.
I remember having said in an earlier thread I wanted ‘The Sacrifice’ to be played on my funeral, but the last film I would want to see would probably have to be ‘Eternity and a day’ by Theo Angelopolous.

a christmas story so i can die laughing
Shotzi
Alright, you’re laid up in a hospital or old folks home or something of the like. All of your family is either dead or they don’t give a crap about you, so they’re never coming to visit. There’s a dumpy TV on the wall and you can watch any movie you want to and as soon as the credits role, you die. If there’s like a gag reel in the credits, you can die after the gag reel if that’s a big deal to you. Point being, you have one movie to watch on your deathbed and you’re going to die as soon as it is over and you can’t spend the last hours of your life doing anything else.
WHAT ONE MOVIE ARE YOU GOING TO WATCH?
No lists. I have described the circumstances. If you have questions about the situation I will be happy to answer them. You’re going to die, though. You have to pick ONE movie. Which movie is it and why?
