Antonioni's THE RED DESERT

Do you think it’s a film that’s overdue for a Criterion Release? Does anyone have anyone have imformation on it.?

i have yet to see the film due to the fact of it not having a proper American DVD release. Hopefully criterion will get on it and add the film, or just add more films from Antonioni to their collection. I’d love see La Notte get a criterion release; Truly an under appreciated work from the great director.

Yeeks. I hesitate professing my love for Criterion on this site, as some people can’t abide that degree of devotion. But Antonioni’s films are a text book case of how other “labels” have butchered marvelous films

I don’t know if it’ll answer any of your questions, but I do recall seeing the film listed as intended for release eventually; this link may still be worth trying: http://www.criterionforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23.

News is that there is a restored print of Le Amiche making the rounds now, (I had a copy of the Image DVD that was a complete butcher job; it was so painful to try watching it that I just gave it away.) so that might translate into a Criterion release of that movie. There’s a post in the above provided link that states the notion of a La Notte Criterion release is stalled due, “Problems finding elements for release”.

If any or all of my news is old hat, my apologies; and if anyone has better links to provide, my happy thanks!

Le Amiche is probably the worst Antonioni, so it doesn’t matter. Red Desert is a clear 10 out of 10 and it deserves a Criterion edition.

I have the region 4 DVD but I haven’t watched it yet. I’d like a Criterion release, too, as I like the essays that come with Antonioni titles quite a lot. I once wrote a 36 page paper on Antonioni and so I’ve become somewhat familiar with a fair bit of writing about him.

Dan, no! Le Amiche is great! It’s like Antonioni saddled by the confines of a glossy American melodrama, but everything comes out as cold and alienated as his art-house films. It’s one of his best!

Daniel, sorry, but I found it horrible! :D I’ll give it a second chance.

I think Zabriskie Point is oop in the States also, which would be of interest to the floydians among us (including me!). Not nearly the same level of movie though. The amateur actors really ruin it for me.

re: IL DESERTO ROSSO, I just wish something could be done about the horrible dubbing job over Richard Harris.

We did an Antonioni festival last summer with the National Gallery. Deserto Rosso has a lot of copyright and other legal issues attached. It will probably be a while until those are smoothed out.
