Is TIFF a good festival for a festival newbie? I’m still adjusting from my recent conversion from unskilled labor to skilled labor, and I was thinking of attending a few.
The problem for any of them of course isn’t attendance cost so much as hotel cost. The cost of staying in a hotel during Sundance, for instance, would eclipse the cost of the actual ticket package.
Did anybody see the new Guy Maddin film “Keyhole”? I can’t wait for that one.
@ Jirin – this was was my first time at TIFF as well. i stayed at a (nice) bed & breakfast for $49 a night that was walking distance from the 2 main theaters that were screening the movies.
@ Ian – i didnt see keyhole. i went as industry and we had our own schedule and a lot of movies played at the same time so you ended up having to pick between movies (drive played the same time as dangerous method, the artist le havre keyhole and house of tolerance all played at the same time, melancholia went 20 minutes past the time we need to talk about kevin started, tyrannosaur played at the same time as moneyball, etc)
did anyone seen Rampart?
what’s wrong with twixt? everything? haha
twixt is awful. feels like an extra long episode of nickelodeons are you afraid of the dark. has a really flat (almost cheap) feel to it like a made for cable tv movie.
rampart: hated the movie, loved the lead performance. it makes the assumption that you know all the ins and outs of the corrupt LAPD. i had no idea what was going on half the time. way too many actors who make one of two appearances then disappear for the rest of the movie
^^I’ve heard that Harrelson is great but the movie is so so.
if that’s the case i’m disappointed, since they(i.e Harrelson and the director) worked well together on ‘The Messenger’. and i like the idea of Harrelson as a corrupt cop.
God Bless America anyone?
EDIT: Just noticed that Marcus listed it as one of his highlights!!
really wanna see that, interesting reviews
nice to see Joel Murray topline a movie (was kind of a One Crazy Summer reunion)
I was there, saw “Outside Satan” by Bruno Dumont and Turin horse by bela tarr.
regret missing:
Dardenne bros: The kid with bicycle.
yeah man, i regret missing both of those as well.
i just saw the official trailer for wuthering heights and now im kicking myself even more. all i had to do was wake up on time lol
JapeMan
Just wondering…..
If you are there, what have been the best and worst movies you saw this year?
I am not there but I will be going to the Hamptons film festival in October (aka. The TIFF of Long Island)
