hmmm havent seen the film but it doesnt look like a criterion cover, i dont like it…
No foolin’ Clint. That is one hideous cover.
The “Gomorrah” poster does look a little silly, but I’m more disappointed with the “Downhill Racer” box art. When the original movie poster is clearly more expressive, I think Criterion needs to get a new commission.
The original poster:
The Criterion alternative:
The Criterion cover makes it look like nothing more than a sports movie. The original artwork points toward something more compelling possibly.
I grant you the Downhill Racer jacket is not that inspired, but at least it’s not friggin’ stoopid like the Gomorrah. I would love to see Criterion using the original poster art more often (as in the case with Downhill Racer – great poster!).
I really loved the movie, and i don’t think the cover is TOO offensive honestly, but it does seem a little, ummm how should i say this, childish?
Its almost like they had two covers, and decided, hey lets just put one on top of the other.
But, i am excited that criterion is releasing this film, it is deserving, and there seems to be a lot of back story/ on location complications which i hope will be addressed.
I kind of like the Gomorrah cover. I do not like the Downhill Racer cover…at all.
Perhaps Monsoon Wedding was a prediction for this lot and things to come! Criterion has changed cover art before based on the rallying of the fans.
We might as well expect the “Christmas Tale” cover to be a Christmas tree with all the character’s heads as ornaments or something.
I’m more disappointed that there aren’t really any new extras above what is on the current edition that is available. No commentary track either.
The Gomorrah cover matches the movie itself – crappy and disappointing.
Although I will say A Christmas Tale was much worse.

yeah,OK….what will i hear next?that Rachel Getting Married and Gran Torino are better films????
oh please….
But is it better than this one?

^ is that the regular dvd cover?
I like the Criterion Gomorrah cover and the one Rump has posted. I like the Criterion Downhill Racer and the original ONE SHEET. The Criterion cover DOES give the impression that the film is an action pic set on the slopes, while the original cuts to the core of the film (it’s about the RACER not the racing). I’m more bummed that Paramount even opted to put out a version. Is there sombody at Criterion with some odd love for the film? The extras don’t include a interviews with Redford and/or Hackman?
This release is especially a drag considering all the films (both masterpieces and/or obscurities) that Paramount has failed to even release on DVD (and in some case no VHS either):
Skidoo
Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feeling So Sad
WUSA (Newman/Woodward/Perkins/Harvey)
A New Leaf
TR Baskin
The Stranger (Visconti)
The Sterile Cukoo
Looking for Mr. Goodbar
Too Late Blues
Five Branded Women
Summer & Smoke
and some of those Legend/Paramount releases could use some Criterion love too…Daniel, Serial, Baby, it’s You
On the plus side, that Golden Age of TV looks interesting and of course A Christmas Tale is a welcome addition!
Wheres my Che release!? I gotta say that the Gommorah cover fits what I thought of the film as well, totally ok, not close to greatness.
I actually like the cover, but even if I didn’t I wouldn’t care enough to be truly disappointed.
No. me like.
Looks like Gay Porn…someone at criterionforum put lol
Nah, I like the Gomorrah cover just fine. And although I did a fake cover for Downhill Racer a while back, I’m not sure the film warrants a Criterion release.
i could care less about a box cover. all i care about is; is it a good movie?
the gomorrah cover is very nice. Like the kid walking on the city, but why is it being put out by criterion, and downhill racer, and a christmas tale? is this the best films that they could come up with. Disappointing especially when so many films remain unavailable. Saw Gommorrah and christmas tale in the theatre, not in love with either of them, but suppose there are people out there who love them.
It’s not too bad. Maybe someone should , make one in the Fake Criterion Covers thread
Aha—a challenge!!! As soon as I see the film I will make a cover for it.
It’s not that great, but it’s simplistic and gritty and real, which is the films premise
i actually like the Gomorrah cover. But then again, its a dvd box cover, so who really cares?
well, the criterion cover is extremely similar, like almost spot on, to the posters i saw on the walls of the ifc theatre when i saw it there last year
There isn’t a lot that could have been done a cover without it being totally abstract, which would have been totally unnecessary. It’s not the best, but then again, I’m not one to say that every single Criterion cover looks better. Just some.

I don’t know, but just the way they photoshopped him walking on top of the city looks very… cheesy. Half of the work done at the “Fake Criterion Covers” forum is light years ahead of this quality-wise. Anyone else agree?
