Anyone else here who finds IMDb's message boards boring

Well? :)

Yes! So welcome to the best place on earth/the internet!

EDIT: You’ve been here for a year!? What are you doing still on IMDb? :)

Thanks, Drew! :)

I know this might sound weird: If I’m in the mood to bore myself with those hate posts, I go to IMDb’s message boards, arguing and bitching always seems to be the main event there. LOL! :D

But if I’m in the mood to interact with REAL film enthusiasts, I go here to this classy website.

“Uh, did there have to be so much smoking in this movie?”

Well, sorry, but I’ve been here three or four months now, I’ve been on the IMDb Classics (aka cinephile) board for eight years or so, I’m still there and on the whole I spend more time there than I do here and find at least as high, probably a higher, proportion, of content to noise than I do here. Admittedly even the noise here is film-related, but how do thread titles like…
‘If Eyes Wide Shut and Mulholland Drive had a baby what would it look like’
‘Top 10 Films of all time’ (what, AGAIN???)
‘Last Movie You saw and Rate it’ (shouldn’t that be, review it? And it has 2612 posts on it!!)
‘Which Criterion Menu and Package Design Do You Love?’
‘Meaningless Thread’
‘Anyone here currently playing the Open Mag Beta on the PS3’ (
sorry, the what?
)
‘Dirk Diggler is Jake Lamotta’
‘Fuck Opinions’

look any more rewarding than:
‘Bette Davis in The Night of the Iguana’
‘What Classics Did You See Last Week’ (that means films of all sorts, it contains reviews, the films are international and high quality, the reviews are always 90% intelligent, it only has 117 posts on it which means I could actually read it from scratch, and it’ll renew itself next week_)
Movie Poll: Titanic, Yay or Nay
Warren Beatty’s Slept with 12775 women?
Photo quiz: who is this character?
My 100 Favourite Films of the Decade (_at least it’s not all time!
)
Ten Romantic Entanglements I’d Like To Have Cast
Loneliness Is … (guaranteed film-related …)

Not that I’d open more than two or three of the second list, but frankly none of the first. I opened this one in desperation (work-avoidance activity has a lot to answer for). This place has an elegant design (better than the CFB), some interesting people who aren’t on the CFB, the chance to post pictures direct., and threads about art and poetry. (And, of course, the online films, but that’s a different issue).
But dismissing the IMDb from here ain’t appropriate.

Repeat post, mistake, sorry. Another advantage of the IMDb – it has a Delete button.

My favourite part about The Auteurs is STOP THE LISTS! so until they buy over Drew, Zahcary etcetera, I can’t bring myself to read IMDB.

EDIT: Oh no, if this post were a movie, I would give it one star.

Yes well, that’s a matter of being a regular here or not, I suppose. I can’t even begin to imagine opening a thread with 79 000 posts in it, what would be the point? How far back would I have to go to get the gist? In any case, I suspect it’s an established club of which I’m not a member. Which I freely admit is one reason why I spend a lot of time on the CFB, even if the chat spreads across the serious threads

Stop the Lists! will soon be published as book which will make it easier for non-regulars to get the gist. But seriously, it’s the unofficial Auteurs chatroom where anyone can have great film discussions. It doesn´t matter if you’re a regular or not, and isn´t even necessary to have read the previous pages.

i understand your frustration concerning many a-threads around here Ari but not only a couple of director and Greek cinema threads i’ve created were vanished some time ago, but a large number of quality read threads, obscure or not are constantly devoured by the fanfare of popular threads like the ones you refer to and let’s be honest, it’s not really the majority of the threads that’s annoying there on IMDB but the sparks and flickers of many reviewers, even on the Bresson film threads bitching is a constant phenomenon…. (Bresson out of my head but that could very well be an example of others, well-known and not auteurs)

Oh, I’m not defending the whole of the IMDb social structure, just one board. I flicker off and on a couple of others which make fairly consistent sense, but they’re both very slow. I’ve never entered an individual film board. But that problem is exactly the same as the IMDb’s problem. Those lists were – more or less – the first eight threads, or ‘eight out of the first twelve’ on each site. But I know I could find eight good threads in the first three or four pages of CFB. I’m not QUITE so sure here.

And with all due respect, the IMDb ITSELF is still indispensable for what it’s actually for, even if it has gaps.

I’m Ali. Ari’s someone else. :)

To Apu. OK, but in that case you have to be prepared to follow it constantly to know what the discussion is about, and that’s really not on unless it is the only place you ever go to or you know people so well that you’ll be interested whether they’re discussing Ruiz or Spielberg or streaming technology or actor’s sex-lives. It’s still discouraging for a stranger with limited time. I looked at it a couple of times and the discussion, which was fine I’m sure, was about stuff I wasn’t very interested in. It takes a while to find that out with such a general thread. I’m a great believer in putting titles on the outside :) (PS, just looked again and it’s currently about loo-spin, volleyball and Hawaiian tourist attractions :). Nothing against any of them, but just a little bit QED, no? :))

Not boring so much as sad or amusing [depending on how I feel at the time], having been here for a few months I can’t take IMDb seriously anymore.

haha, yeah, i know Ali, i think i mis-typed the name while on the urge to finish the text ;)

check a bit closer and you’ll find out threads like the Hungarian movies or Hou’s filmography analysis and plenty more, even obscure ones like Sembene’s masterful expression and even if they are fewer than they look like, at least it’s something, no?
