Anyone See Romero's Newest Zombie Offering?

Dennis Brian

I have seen all Romero’s work. I hate only Diary of the Dead and The Dark Half. My favorites are Night of the Living Dead, Land of the Dead and Bruiser.

The newest one Survival is on dish for 5 bucks, is it worth seeing, anyone see it?

Yes, somebody spill the beans. I’ve been mildly curious myself.

Been there, done that. Romero was in attendance and it was not a great film, but pretty entertaining. It’s the same thing with a few new things. Overall, it’s kinda fun. 7/10

I do not think the trailer looks that bad, mostly it just looks cheap but the concept is pretty clever

besides the zombie riding the horse I dont think that trailer has an ounce of creativity :/ Romero needs to bring back hordes of slow zombies

Romero… has really stretched himself thin with this stuff… and I should be on his side! I’m for this nonsense! But I turned off Diary about 1/3 of the way in, it was unwatchably bad. Day of the Dead demonstrated the capacity of Romero’s imagination for scope… we need more films of great scope! Land of the Dead was at least on the right track.

maybe if Land had been a hit (it should have) then he could have gone bigger
but is wasnt and he scaled down (to modest sucess—tho like u I hate diary) and seems to be in a rut

I’m obviously alone here in that I liked Diary quite a bit, actually, but I also really enjoyed Survival of the Dead. It’s got a very Western feel to it, it’s fun as all hell, and Romero proves that he’s the one zombie director who doesn’t rely on obnoxious noises and rapidly appearing objects for scares. In my opinion he’s still running circles around his contemporaries.

No, have not seen the newest one or Diary. Last I saw was Land of The Dead (which I did enjoy)

My favourite of his ate Martin and Night of The Living Dead (still the best zombie movie out there)

I think I posted my reply in the wrong thread. I haven’t seen Diary, but Survival is not that bad. It’s worth seeing if you like that series.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago. It’s very much a late period film, by which I mean it reminded me of movies like Howard Hawks’s Hatari and John Ford’s Donovan’s Reef or Fellini’s Intervista, in that it’s an unhurried hang out movie, where the director indulges himself in all his peculiar pleasures and idiosyncrasies. It’s not great, and I’m not sure I would even call it particularly good, but I enjoyed it because it gives off the buzz of a movie made by a man who enjoyed himself while making it. I don’t know exactly why everybody on the island speaks with an Irish accent, but I get the feeling it’s probably because Romero just really likes overdone Irish accents (remember the radio operator from Day of the Dead). And he’s clearly in love with the idea of making a zombie western. I like the relatively plain, unforced style, and Romero is a writer/director who clearly tends to like his characters. There’s very little cynicism in this movie. On the downside, the acting is erratic, the dialogue is occasionally groan worthy, character motivations often fail to make sense, and the movie isn’t scary in the least (even Diary had the great hospital sequence). It is probably the best looking film from his late period work, though I miss the EC comics style over saturation of his work with Michael Gornick during the late 70s/early 80s. Still, if you like Romero, you might get some pleasure from this, as I did. It might be slightly superior to Diary of the Dead, since it’s less burdened by a drive to seem contemporary and urgent.

There is no comment on consumer culture or civil rights. There may not be anything weighty at all.
Maybe one could argue that the film is about devisive feuds (religious vs humanist maybe) and a human’s need to be self destructive.
But this is done through a fascinating Hatfield and McCoy type feud, well played by two fine veteran actors.

One could argue that there are so many genre conventions in here, but so what the best Hawks films had those same conventions.
But the film goes beyond those conventions with great humor and forward movement.

This is a harsh film about family and groups that need to survive yet it never pushes into sentiment; it pushes away from it for a laugh or jolt.
That is not to say that things are sad and involving (like the story of the poor man’s daughters). I love this film. The fishing sequence, 20 out of the last 30mins or so that is all about creative zombie deaths. The last 10 are devoted to a development of zombie evolution that had me on the edge of my seat. I really hope they make a sequel to this, and I am not usually one to hope for sequels.

Bravo George

Grade A+ (best film of 2010 I have seen so far)

I like zombie movies and I’m pretty easy to please as far as they go. I don’t worry about reinventing the zombie wheel. Just give me a new setting and some different characters and I’ll be happy, which I got with Survival so I was pleased. Had fun watching it.

There were some problems though. For me, zombie stories are human stories and should have some emotional appeal. Survival didn’t really set me up to care about any of the characters because they sorely lacked any development whatsoever. And for the most part, it didn’t seem like they cared about each other.

It was about close family ties but not a single character batted an eye or shed a tear when one of those ties were broken. To be fair, there was one dude in the very beginning who cried. AND when the main character’s best friend died he acted super pissed for about 10 seconds…but then I guess he forgot. I don’t even know if the others in the group even noticed he died. Other than that, no one really seemed to care when someone was getting munched on…therefore I didn’t either.

This was my main beef. The rest of the movie was fun. Zombies’ heads exploding and people getting eaten. I just wish there was some character development. Some heart.

Definitely one for the ZOMBIE COMEDY genre.

it’s holds a special place in my heart cause it takes place around Delaware. plus, it’s a fun movie to watch every time.

hey chad, in zombie films people usually find it difficult 2 become emotionally attached with each other developing caring relationships because they might have 2 kill each other 2 avoid becoming the living dead… that might be why the characters are not comforting emotionally

the feud between the 2 families sets up a sense of being unsure of who is more evil the zombies or the people

u must have liked the girl character with the horse and her family secret?

Again, I thought SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD was entertaining. Definitely a fun watch and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the zombie genre. But it’s a lighter one and coming out on the COMEDY end.

@LIKE2SLEEP -I’ve never found that to be the case in most zombie films. Yeah, the theory sounds good but it’s impossible not to grow attached to those around you. No one wants to be left alone or even feel like they’re alone especially when something like this happens. The entire story takes place, if I remember correctly, about a month after the outbreak. Surely they haven’t completely lost all traces of humanity.

Think about the remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD. There’s a dude stuck in the gun shop. Ving Rhames plays chess with him. He becomes ’our buddy in the gun shop" and they definitely grow attached to him. Even devising a plan to get him food.

THE HORDE is about two feuding groups. Police vs Mobsters who want to murder each other but when the zombies break out they form a truce with each other to survive. They don’t like each other but they form a respect for each other.

28 DAYS LATER (if you consider it a zombie movie) would be the best example of your theory. The female character doesn’t want to form close bonds for your exact reasoning. But in the end love wins out and she becomes attached to all of them.

In SURVIVAL the best example of attachment was in the beginning. The parents protecting their children who were already turned. But that was really the only attachment I felt. It’s the only time the viewer feels sorry for the characters.

The larger point of the story being people continue to squabble over petty things when they’re missing the big picture. The “Antagonist Cowboy” didn’t really care about his people. He just cared about his pride and proving his rival wrong. I guess that was the Captain’s problem too. A deep seated family feud.

There were small bonds formed. But not any that made me care.

The zombie horse girl was pretty cool. I would have liked to see her get a kill from her perch but oh well….would have also liked to see how she managed to get on the damn thing.
