apartment horror

hi

i have seen all 3 polanski movies belonging to his “apartment trilogy”,pls give a reco for other such movies ,i think "person in a room " genre sort of overlaps with this genre ,so any suggestions from that genre is also welcome ,

overall i think repulsion is the best ,the way external becomes “internal” in that movie ,i have never seen anything like that ,for me its the best exmaple of subjective POV ,and then tenant with its trace of black humour running through the whole movie and the use of mirror in both the movies ,and who can forget the sound design where tap water ,flies in repulsion etc there are so many examples,.i wish i could get the screenplays for both these movies ,thouogh i have done my own scene by scene anaylsis and it helped me lot in writing my own script for such kind of movie dealing with a perosn going mad in a crowded urban environment ,

I love the scene in “The Tenant” where Bernard Fresson’s character invites Polanski to his house and starts plays very loud music in his record player. Then the neighbor knocks on his door and an amazing dialogue ensues. That sequence makes me laugh to tears every time I see the film.

yeh true ,one of my fav scenes also ,i think the problem with polanski’s character is that he is mid way, neither he is totally agressive like his frnd nor he is totally sissy

also ,the screaming at the start and the end and who can forget the bathroom visible from polanski’s room

superb atmospheric horror

Glad to see this film get some love….

Very creepy. Polanski lands a casting coup – himself. As a no-personality dullard, Polanski gives a REAL performance. I really like kooky concierge Shelley Winters and crabby landlord Melvyn Douglas and Isabelle Adjani was breathtakingly beautiful!

I lovethe scene with Polanski listening to Winters as she gleefully recalls the attempted suicide of the apartment’s previous FEMALE tenant! He should have left righ then…

I always support Polanski as I am sickened by the pathetic attempts of American law-enforcement authorities to extradite him on trumped-up charges. Viva Roman!

Chasing Sleep, Barton Fink, Images (1972).
I also think the first half of Lost Highway qualifies.

I’ll be honest, I revived this out of personal interest (sorry Rahul)

@Rahul

After Carnage, it’s an Apartment Quadrilogy. That Polanski is awfully ambitious.

“the tenant” by Roland Topor is also well worth checking out for anyone interested in “apartment horror.” I think it surpasses the film.

Several stories in Stefan Grabinski’s (“The Polish Poe”) The Dark Domain (The Glance and The Area, in particular) are in a similar vein. One of the amazon reviews for the book claims “Roman Polanski, the controversial filmmaker has been said to be inspired by the Grabinski’ horror style.”

I have only seen the American one, but is there a general consensus on Dark Water on here? I only watched it once many years ago, but I remember the first 2/3 or so being really good, but being somewhat let down by the last 1/3. Also, is the Japanese one significantly better/worse/different than the American one? If not, I probably won’t bother with it. I still haven’t watched the Japanese version of The Ring.

Also, only seen Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby out of that trilogy (quadrilogy?), but really liked Rosemary’s Baby, and loved Repulsion. The only part about RB that took me out of it a little was the scene (scenes?) with the Prince of Darkness. But Repulsion is fantastic, and probably the only Catherine Deneuve performance that I really love, though I have probably only seen 5 or 6 of her films.

Immediately comes to my mind Kubrick with Misery and Shining (well it’s not really an apartment here but the claustophobric effect is similar)… And of course Hitchock’s Psycho, Rear WIndow and Rope..
