Let’s throw some ideas around about Ichikawa.

Anyone seen Fires on the Plain, The Burmese Harp or Tokyo Olympiad? Incredible films. Any other recommendations?

You have to watch “Enjo” (1958). A critic against society from a hieratical point of view.

i loved tokyo olympiad and the burmese harp. Extremely poetic. infact, tokyo O really got me charged up then to make a film. there’s really a lot of work in the documentary!

The three films you’ve mentioned are all excellent, esp. Fires on the Plain. But, check out “Odd Obsessions”, when you get the chance. Quite an interesting subject, and the final shot of the ending still creeps me out!

WOW, What a great filmmaker, Fires on the plain is a balance of horror and beauty, the first one in the subject, and the last one in the form. Every single shot is beautifully composed, like a “disturbing beauty”. Burmese Harp is another great masterpiece and very spiritual

I’d strongly recommend Kokoro (1955), The Inugami Family (1976). I Am a Cat (1975) and The Makioka Sisters (1983) are nice films. I’m dying to see Nihonbashi (1956), Her Brother (1960), Hakai (1962), Ai futatabi (1971), The Wanderers (1973), Actress (1987) and some other films from the Kihaichi series. BTW, I’m the first one who commented here since over one year? Wow.

If anyone can, please post links. I’ve only seen Fires on the Plain and The Burmese Harp but I’d love to see more.

I’ve only seen Fires on the Plain and Dora-Heita. Fires was quite good but Dora-Heita was rather disappointing, like a hack version of Yojimbo.

kokoro’s examination of the tradition of male pedagogy rather cannily exposes the homosocial verging on homoerotic basis to all such relationships ,for a film of the 50s from a conservative society like japan[though slightly less so when it comes to sexual concerns ]it is quite startling .[and strangely subtle]
