Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Returning to Films Soon. Anyone Interested

Arnold Schwarzenegger certainly has a knack for action. His films are huge spectacles, perhaps the bigness distracts from the lack of a good performance. But he has a certain charm and I enjoy some of his films. I think the role of aging muscle man screams comedy but he is currently talking about a heavy drama project that I think is questionable (his dramatic scenes in End of Days were laughable) but I will certainly see it.

from dark horizons:

“Currently I’m reading three scripts. One topic/script, which I considered a long time ago before governor, is delighting me particularly. In it I would play an older soldier, who gets the order at the ending of the war to kill a bunch of kids. But he doesn’t do it and get them to safety at the risk of his life and it has all kind of adventure. This script is based on a true story!” he says.

That project he’s referring to is the Randall Wallace-scripted “With Wings As Eagles” which is based on the true life story about a German officer who does not agree with his surrounding Nazi party and instead helps the American POWs escape.

Schwarzenegger goes on to say that age limitations mean he can’t be the man of action he once was anymore – “In the future I have to adapt my roles to my age. Clint Eastwood also has done it in the same way. Extreme fighting or shooting is not possible anymore. I want to be more encouraged as an actor and I believe that I can manage this challenge. I am like a sponge, which is absorbing all the knowledge and always be willing to learn all new things.”

I liek Wallace and I know that German soilders were quite old (some nearly 70) so his age is not a factor. I think he could hit this out of the park with the right director. Anything that keeps him out of politics..

I love a good action film, but I never really cared for Arnold. I liked him in the first Terminator because he hardly said a word.

I like him quite a bit. He has a humorous machismo that Burt Reynolds also has. I cannot quite defend much of his choices but I like him on screen.

Malik

The only action star I care about now is Jason Statham.

is that true Malik? I have a hard time watching him myself.

I do enjoy the energy of the Crank films

Conan the Septuagenarian?

He’s funny and isn’t afraid to be self-deprecating in his movies. His action films don’t feel like they’re trying to ape 80s masculinity with the cool of contemporary.

@Den

But Reynolds actually had acting chops.

they feel like video games I don’t want to play imo and I have yet to see any of that humor

but my gf likes him so I suspect I will continue to watch em.

anyone think he has a good career ahead of him?

Put a fork in him.

Malik

Who?

I have a strong childhood connection to his films, regardless of their quality, so I’m with anything he does next in cinema. Looking forwards to his upcoming projects. Perhaps an expanded role in The Expendables 2? No need for intense action, Rourke didn’t have to do anything physically strenuous in the first.

I was asking about Arnold Malik

Jazz Reynolds has acting chops but Arnold has media savy

I suspect he will be just fine and the German project does sound interesting.

nice story – kind of a reversal of The Reader (3.45873655/10 I think I gave that)

I reckon he could do ok with good direction

Malik

Depends if Arnold realizes he’s 3 decades removed from his heyday and picks his roles accordingly.

The only action star today that has a screen presence somewhat comparable to the old 80’s guys is probably Vin Diesel, and even he is nowhere near their level. Jason Statham just looks like a rough pub crawler that got a lucky break. At least Diesel looks and acts like a star.

DEN: End Of Days was about redemption man! you missed the point! hehe j/k

Malik

That’s part of Jason’s charm though.

I’m anxious to see what he does. I hope he does what Malik suggested.

“The only action star today that has a screen presence somewhat comparable to the old 80’s guys is probably Vin Diesel”

?!?!?

I’d actually like to see non-action hero types (someone normal looking who can act) star in action films. I’m probably in the minority on this, though.

Ari

But isn’t that the whole point of the Bourne films, Jazzy?

Jazzaloha

@Ari

I don’t know if Matt Damon is a “non-action hero type.” I’m thinking of someone like Ed Norton, Tobey Maguire or Joseph Gordon-Leavitt. All of them are strong, likable leads who can act, but they don’t have the movie star looks or action hero physique. Plus, I’m not sure if the “whole point” of the Bourne films was to feature this average looking person in the lead role. I mean, Jason Bourne was a CIA trained killer, too.

For action leads, I really like Daniel Craig.

There is always Taken to go back to with Liam Nelson.

This will last one or two movies and then he’ll be back doing “comedies” with Danny Devito.

Jazzaloha

Man, I did not like Taken, either. It had a really good premise, but the film went downhill from there. I didn’t care for Liam, either. :(

hell yeah, maybe he can have expanded role as Trent Mouse in the Expendables sequel. :))))

Even aged into his fifties, Charles Bronson looked as if he could rip off your arm, decapitate you with it, then sodomise you with your own decapitated head.

Vin Diesel looks like the type of guy who’ll charge you a few hundred dollars per hour to let you touch his muscles in a hotel room.

The fact that Mark Sinclair Vincent chose a screen name that just screams “gay male porn star” doesn’t help, either. I mean seriously, “Vin Fucking Diesel?” Now if he WERE a gay male porn star, fine and dandy, but c’mon, “VIN FUCKING DIESEL?”

One was a decent actor who had buckets of presence and was a veritable tough guy. The other is a Chippendales reject (he couldn’t grow the mandatory mullet) pretending to be an actor. You work out which is which.

Exhibit A: Charles Bronson: Tough Guy.

Exhibit B: Vin Diesel: Pusscake.

I’ve never bothered with Vin Diesel films because in trailers he just looks and sounds horrible. You can tell within seconds he cannot act, cannot read lines (Rocky Balboa did a better job with the cue cards doing the men’s fragrance commercial in “Rocky II”) and he has no “X” factor, that certain “It” that would separate him from so many other muscleheads.

So please don’t even try to compare Vin Cheezel to the great action stars of the 1980s.

As for Ah-nold, I’d be interested to see him return to films…not that I’ve bothered with much of his input into Hollywood during the past how many years. I’ve often wondered (and I’m being serious here) why Arnie doesn’t try his hand at a German language film. I’d love to hear and see Arnie act in his original language.
