Basically thoughts on the short-lived comedy series and the yet to be made film.

Its (bleepin) hilarious.

Hans Lucas

Yeah, the only thing about the movie though is that it’s supposed to take place five years from where the series left off and Michael Cera is the only person who hasn’t signed on yet and he’s not sure if he wants to do the film.

I’m afraid I prematurely shot my wad on what was supposed to be a dry run, if you will, and now I have somewhat of a mess on my hands. … You can zing your arrow into my buttocks at any time.

To be perfectly honest, i don’t like much tv. I mean i watch a good amount and i enjoy almost ALL tv (no matter what, especially bad programming is hilarious), but i find that all tv programming is shit and totally fucked by production and marketing. Having said that, I think that Arrested Development is THE BEST SHOW that was ever on tv. I think the writing is unparalleled and the direction is wild and extremely reliant on narration. It’s fucking fantastic. I will however say that the best SHOT show in terms of visual direction is the UK’s “SPACED.” It’s by edgar wright and simon pegg, check it out.

It’s the second best television comedy so far.

Spaced was a great show, but I don’t know about it being the best shot TV show ever.

hilarious show, like todays version of SOAP (which was too far ahead of it’s time to be fully appreciated, I think)

such a shame that AD got taken off the air. doesn’t surprise me though. it’s things like that that give me so little faith in people. then again, the auteurs gives me the faith back.

AD and Spaced FTW.

This is the auteurs.

I can’t think of another TV show (other than spaced) that had a more dynamic camera style in terms of how it paralleled the story and the movie/tv references strewn about the show.

The Wire. That would be the best show ever made for TV. But, it’s so good that it goes beyond television. I know it’s been said before but it really is more like a filmed novel. Plus, I’d put any season of it up against most films. It’s the only TV series I own and it takes its place proudly among the best of my humble little DVD library.

“Of course! Bob Loblaws Law Blog – You Sir are a mouthful!”

I love this show to death yet I am terrified of the movie. So many comedy shows have been put to death by the movie releases. On the other hand, it could be amazing. I’ll see it either way.

Im so glad this was mentioned here.

i’ve heard the wire is great. even though i hate tv, i’m definitely going to check it out

Just found out that there is a new show that Hurwitz is involved in, so is Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Henry Winkler. Its called ‘Sit Down and Shut Up!" here’s a link to a promo for it http://www.tv.com/video/14216/101/75287/series-premiere?o=tv&tag=;video;

Best comedy of all-time put to death by half-wits who would rather watch “reality” and people whos first viewed episode was in season 2.

Move this to imdb, it’s a tv show.

To quote critic David Thomson:

“… look, if you like sustained narrative and developed character, you’ve got to face the fact that these days television frequently beats out what you see at the movies.”

From: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/31/RVTR13P0DH.DTL&feed=rss.books

Simply because it’s a television show doesn’t mean it should be excluded from consideration as a serious work.

Shinichi

That’s a good point matthias, but the problem i have with t.v. is the repetitive format and how writing is almost always dictated by the production.

Matthias Galvin

That’s typically true, but the best shows (with good writing and direction behind them) are usually able to transcend production necessity (including repetition and intentional discontinuity) and/or demonstrate to the network that there is ample freedom for creative excursion while also serving commercial interests. In the case of Arrested Development it was the lack of production-dictated writing and intentionally commercial alterations to format and structure that it no longer airs.

Shinichi

Exactly! Because it broke that format, it was cancelled (and it was in the same time slot as the sopranos). But that’s the point, it didn’t follow those rules and the last episode was SOOO rushed. Which is why i prefer the british broadcasting format of having only two seasons and a christmas special, that way artistic integrity isn’t jeopardized and you can keep the show nice and succinct. I mean, most american television have to follow all the same beats that all other shows of its kind has to follow. The only shows I can think of which don’t get muddled with corporatism and production are a lot of hbo/showtime programming. I mean, I love Curb Your Enthusiasm and Flight of the Conchords but shows like Weeds, Entourage, The Tudors, Rome, etc. etc. are all so formulaic and clearly catered to a SPECIFIC demographic. Weeds and Entourage especially, i fucking god damn hate both of those shows. I actually like Dexter a lot, but it still gets bogged down in its own bullshit.

I think another big reason i’m not crazy about t.v. is because it’s not particularly driven by any one force, other than production. Movies are great because a lot of them are just so clearly auteur-driven, where you can see the director’s hand plainly and you can see (or at least try to interpret what the director is getting at). With TV, almost every episode has a different director! How am I supposed to let the visuals get to me when they change every episode? I mean, one episode can be fantastically shot and directed, while the next episode (even with the still great writing) be directed completely differently!
