Sorry for posting twice my mistake.
Beautiful film that is no short of perfect.
Beautifully shot, but terribly boring.
Sorry Lester-I don’t find it boring at all. I’ve watched it 3 times and enjoy it more with each viewing.
This film could be one of the greatest film ever made. It is truly perfect I can’’t get over how good this movie is so I had to post again.
This one’s on my hold list at the library.
I’ve seen it a couple times. It is just stunning! Love the soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis as well.
I’ll have to give this one another go-around.
Good film, but I’ll stop short of saying it’s great because it seems just a bit too derivative (of Malick, among others).

Absolutely beautiful film. It has such a poetic quality.
I’ve been trying to get my friends to watch this movie. I was really surprised by how much I loved this movie.
Casey Affleck’s performance was unbelievable. Brad Pitt was amazing to.
One of my favorite parts was how they filmed the landscapes. The first train robbery was also perfect.
I really could go on and on about it.
A really great movie. In my opinion, the best american movie of the last 3-4 years.Amazing cinematography and directing,a great performance by Casey Affleck.I was really surprised,I believed that they no longer make such movies in America.
The train robbery, with its long wait in the dark: superb.
The relationship of Ford/Affleck and James/Pitt: superb.
This movie is great in three different ways:
1) As a modern commentary on fame/celebrity
2) As a vibrantly re-envisioned genre piece about one of America’s most infamous outlaws, replete with a period-accurate narration that envelops the viewer.
3) As a stunning art film about existential dread and the smallness of individual lives, beautifully shot and with a pitch perfect score by the one and only Nick Cave
Didn’t Nick Cave do The Proposition? Are westerns his new thing? Interesting.
Lester-The director of Jesse James is also Australian so I think that’s where the Nick Cave connection comes in.
Love this movie, so glad to have it on HD-DVD. Some people find it boring but I was interested the entire way through. The scene at the end where the title of this movie comes true, my God it’s so perfectly built up. The whole time all 3 were in the room and everyone knew what was going on, it was just really intense and I loved it.
I loved it. Boring by no means. But i can understand that being said.
OK what the hell? Slumdog Millionaire, Evil Dead 2, Point Blank, Help I’m a Fish!, Benjamen Button are on here but not this!!??
Eh. So-so western. Best portrayal of Jesse James. That’s not saying much though, only other Jesse James I’ve seen was Colin Farrell in American Outlaws. Terrible, campy, fatuous portrayal, even worse film.
I’m going to whole-heartedly disagree with Rossoneri Fan. I mean, he’s comparing it to American Outlaws, for christ sake.
Nothing about this movie is campy, I have no idea where he got that from. And fatuous? Come on! There’s no way this movie comes off as pointless. I mean, this guy is off his rocker.
Well acted. Well written. Well directed. Obscenely well shot.
I could see how you just might not like the movie, if it’s not your taste, but you really have to work to find reasons this movie is “terrible”.
I was refering to American Outlaws not Assassination of jesse james with that last sentence.
Never said Assassination was terrible; just thought it was so-so.
….and what’s wrong with Evil Dead 2?
anyways, only saw this once and the only reason i haven’t bought it yet is because that Alejandro Jodorowsky Box Set was on sale, dammit! i loved this movie. i get sick of people calling it boring. there is SO much going on!!! if you pay attention, how can it be boring? sure, someone doesn’t get shot every two minutes, but still—there’s a story going on here. if you don’t like it because its not your thing, sure…but why do people keep calling it boring? well told, (mostly) well acted, beautifully shot, and, well, just a damn good movie.
sorry. i’m drunk. what were we talking about?
oh yea, why did Afflek get charged, er—nominated for Supporting Actor? i’d say this film is more about him than it is Jesse AND he seemed to get more screen time. anyone agree?
My bad. Read it wrong, I guess. I just really like this movie and just watched it again yesterday.
With that said, American Outlaws IS terrible.
Saw it again. Still don’t get what all the fuss is about. Great cinematography, but it doesn’t compensate for the painful pacing.
Great movie! I didn’t find it boring at all. Beautifully filmed, well acted and deliberately paced.
I hope all of you have been sending emails to suggestions@criterion.com, so we can maybe one day get the DC of this beautifully amazing movie.

Beautiful film. One of my favorites of all time. I love it’s Literary quality. They should add it to the Auteurs. And they need to release the original 4 hour cut on DVD!!!!!!
