Auterism and Excess

Hello everyone!

I’m in the middle of writing a paper for my film seminar about auteurs and my topic is “Auterism and Excess in Michael Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans” and my thesis is that auteurism and cinematic excess share a connection in so far that excess provides a way for a director through the excessive use of stylistic devices (concerning their specific form as well as their selection, frequency, and combination), to highlight and personalize his own specific style and stylization as an auteur.

I rewatched the movie a few times in the last few days but I was thinking if anyone here might have any examples for excess, especially on the grounds of stylistic devices and cinematography, in The Last of the Mohicans? Any ideas? :-)

usually when the idea of auteurism is approached, it is easier referring 2 examples of other films from the same director… that way u can emphasize your point about their individual style :O)

Excess made me think about Georges Bataille The accursed share
never seen that movie so sorry cant help you there
but overall i think we need more excess
and arrogance

PS
It is said that the film crew of Scanners gave Cronenberg a t shirt that read “More blood”

I think we need the OP to define “excess” and “excessive” in order to people able to address this.

Do I understand you chose the topic for your paper before having any examples in mind?
