AUTEURS WORLD CUP: OPEN TO ALL, NEWCOMERS WELCOME, THE BASICS

Kenji

Many users here will have seen the world cup threads, but not been interested or perhaps not understood or thought they could participate. We are happy to have new participants, there have been a decent number of dedicated and regular participants but more are very welcome.

A quick run-down of the basics:

We’ve picked 32 teams, mainly countries, with a few wider regions, in a competition like the football (soccer) world cup, with 8 groups of 4; 2 teams qualifying from each group for the last 16 and knock-out stages.

Each team has had a manager, who has selected 3 films for each match

Matches are decided by users/participants’ voting preferences for one film paired against another. Originally we set a director limit rule but that is now scrapped, except that directors can only appear once in the same match. We had some difficult (not always entirely consistent) decisions to make on the eligibility of certain directors to represent certain countries, but director’s birthplace and then the films’ country were uppermost as criteria, with an element of flexibility

We are now at the knock-out stage, with the last 16 draw posted on the world cup knockout draw thread. We are awaiting managers’ selections of their 3 films for the next round which will be announced on 4th November. We expect the matches for the next round will take place, 2 per day, from 17th November.

To participate all you need do is to have seen both films in each pairing to give your preference; you cannot vote if you have only seen one film in the pairing. That is why we set aside some time before the matches kick off for viewing. Comments and explanations for the votes are welcome and encouraged, but not obligatory.

The purpose is to encourage the discovery of hidden treasures, promote neglected areas of the world, question received wisdom, as well as have some fun with a competition. It has been a lengthy process but is set to finish before Christmas. We may do things differently another time, as it’s been a learning process. The Anglophone countries happen to have been eliminated, due to a mix of circumstances. Europe and Asia have been performing well, as has notably team Africa

So any enthusiasts do come on board. Look for the world cup threads- some are for matches and voting, others with results and tables, others for general comments. We had hoped to have and were promised a separate section away from the forum but that has not been provided. It was certainly not the intention to be exclusive (far from it), to distract from other forum threads or dominate the forum, but instead we hope the cup can be a springboard for other threads, e.g on national cinemas or films, discoveries and directors..

While I have not participated in the actual voting in any of the matchups because of time limitations (ie: work, errands and this crazy notion that my wife has that I actually spend time with her doing stuff besides watching films) I have watched several of the selected films and discovered some hidden gems. The hard work that the organizers have put into this effort cannot be understated and I encourage everyone on this site who has the time to watch some of these films. Your time spent will be well rewarded.

Just a couple questions;
- Which topic do we need to go to to find out which films to watch for the next few rounds?
- Which topic is it that will tell us how to see some of the films which aren’t on DVD?

I’ve been wanting to take part but due to time limitations (been pretty busy) and general confusion as to how things are working haven’t voted once yet…

And thanks for running this guys and gals, even if a lot of us (namely me) are too useless to get around to watching some of the films/vote &c.

@ William: The next round of films have not yet been finalized by all the managers. Their selections are due by I believe November 2nd or 3rd. So once they’re all in, a new thread will most likely be created by kenji or apursansar which will list them. Christine hasn’t been around the site much lately I don’t think, but on her profile, you will be able to find streaming links (hopefully all with English subs this time around) for those films that aren’t as commercially available. If you go there now, you’ll see that she has kindly compiled the list of all the streaming links that were found for the films in each match, in a convenient and straightforward manner. (These were for the group rounds though, which are now over.)

But yes, others out there — do try to participate! It may be a daunting endeavour at first once you see the list of films, but as long as you’ve seen both films in a pairing then you’re eligible to vote. So pick and choose which you’d like to see if you can’t get to it all, or maybe give the opponent a try, against the film that you’ve already seen before, in a specific pairing.

Seeing as how it’s October 31st, it feels wrong not to say Happy Halloween today to everyone… So Happy Halloween!

thanks kenji and yes “this forum REALLY needs stickies and separate forums.”

A quick little bump, just in case this got buried.

This thread needs to come to life again. The separate world cup page is finally in the making.

well, i’ve had a message today but it could be another mirage, there have been so many false dawns.

World cup newbies will find the films selected to view and vote, on the thread World Cup last 16 (1/8 finals) match line-ups

Just a bump. The AWC has its category in the forum section now, folks.

I’ve only seen one of the chosen films before (Charulata, which is brilliant) so I’ve got a lot of watching ahead of me if I’m to vote, but I hope to vote on at least 4 pairings ideally. The AWC forum section is really useful so to whoever runs this place thanks for that.

Looking forward to vote in the knockout matches!
Just curious, what time zone does the date of the matches refer to?

Myra

daffy, we’ve decided on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for the time zone. :)

The official world cup page with the line-ups and complete 1/8 final films provided by The Auteurs staff has meanwhile been finished and can be found on: http://www.theauteurs.com/worldcup2009

Fantastic! Thanks to Gabe or whomever worked on that page. I think the design is just fantastic!

I’m glad to see the AWC being given a special place here, because it just may be the most significant thing this site has done so far. I wish it was getting as much notice as the Fake Criterion Thread, but it’s still young yet.

This heightened importance raises the stakes just a bit. You’re going down Spain! (says the guy who is literally in love with Los Olvidados)

I want to thank the auteurs staff for doing such a great job on the opening WC page posted by Apursansar above and for providing the separate forum heading. This will help to keep the event in focus. This is a site about world cinema at its finest and and an event that highlights the wealth of great films that await our discovery from all corners of the globe.

Thanks to all the managers for their selections and for all those working to post streaming links. Many of the films in the event already have been added to the auteurs films. I suggest everyone on site take a good look at the selections, see what you can, and participate in the upcoming rounds. Everything is now in place for a premier event.

Careful, Italy…
My counter attacks are lethal, and your top scorers are getting old! :-)

Drew Gregory

Old? 27-33 may be old for a Spaniard, but not for an Italian!

Kenji

I’m watching that Italy-Spain match up with great interest!

bumping this, for any new participants as we are now on the 1/4 finals, and a few weeks to go before the grand final. Newcomers, look for the world cup page, threads with 1/4 final selections, and with links to films selected for viewing. The 4 1/4 final matches over 2 days in the coming week:

China v Russia
Japan v Italy
Germany v India
Iran v Africa

Hey, Kenj. I am one of those newcomers. I voted in seven pairing last round, and I am on schedule to vote in all of the pairings except the Human Condition pairing this round. It has been a lot of fun for me so far, and I am very impressed with all the work that has gone into this.

Thanks to all those that have contributed.

Myra

Glad to see that more people are participating! Welcome, Sir Douglas. :)

Kenji

well done, great to have you onboard and i’m just sorry about the awkward length of Human Condition (though part 1 will do)- i should have had HaraKiri, also by Kobayashi, left at this stage as a strong alternative but made a misjudgment. Still, i think HC is worth drawing attention to and checking out, even if after the world cup. Some excellent selections by the managers i think.
