Lisandro alonso is argentinian…and a great artist.
Alonso and Solà are from Argentina and Farnarier is french, but all these films have been produced with spanish producers, and CAJA CERRADA and EL SOMNI are both shoot in Catalonia, as EN CONSTRUCCION, DE NENS and HONOR DE CAVALLERIA.
Also, some of these films share the editor or DoP (Serdi Diez, editor for DE NENS, LIVERPOOL and EL SOMNI. Farnarier is DoP of HONOR DE CAVALLERIA and EL SOMNI)

I have trouble classifying something as avant garde. If we’re just talking about boundary-pushing, narrative-and-form defying propositions, then:
Leo es pardo (1976) and Arrebato (1980), by Iván Zulueta.
Tras el cristal / In a Glass Cage (1987 — Agustí Villaronga)
Vacas and Tierra (1996), by Julio Médem
Train of Shadows (2007 — José Luis Guerín)
Goya in Bordeaux (1999 — Carlos Saura)
…and, of course, the work of Buñuel.
Not seen by me but probably fitting:

If you’re looking for Spanish avantgarde filmmakers I can highly recommend this 2 DVD edition – Del Éxtasis al Arrebato – Edición Coleccionistas. 31 films + 150 page book. It doesn’t get any better than this.

EL SOMNI (Christophe Farnarier, 2008)
Farnarier demuestra que no todo va a ser hacer lo mismo que se supone que se sabe hacer. Fotógrafo del Miedo (es decir, Albert Serra) y entusiasta colaborador en películas independientes, en su debut le cede la palabra a Joan, el Pipa, el pastor trashumante, un hombre de otro tiempo para construir el cine del nuestro. Un acto de humildad que se nos revela casi como atávico al ceder el protagonismo al paso de las estaciones, a los caminos primigenios y a las reflexiones naturalistas de los paisajes exteriores e interiores de una Cataluña que ya no existe en un mundo que ya no importa.
