I’m actually writing a screenplay called Wolves in Space right now.
I really think every movie is just so and so in such and such.
Dances with Smurfs? It was Cartman’s idea before James Cameron stole it you know.
Most movies today have a recycled plot. Dances with Wolves is not a wholly original plot. Check out Carroll Ballard’s Never Cry Wolf if you doubt my claims. I would also consider it unfair to make assumptions like this without seeing the film.
Did you happen to watch South Park this week to come to that conclusion Nathan?
Can’t quite say this, Avatar isn’t out yet, and I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been leaked.
You can’t just base things on the trailer.
If your reference in all of human culture extends back no more than a few decades, yeah, sure: a new civilized-man-gone-native or captivity tale is derivative of one made…a few decades ago. But you know that these sorts of tales go back a few millenia, don’t you?
How many Smurf Berries is worth a single Smurf’s life? How many!?!?
“Is there any one else who noticed this? Avatar is just Dances with Wolves in Space.”
or is it?
these are the question i am asking.
Seriously, though, does anyone give a fuck what AVATAR is a rip off of?
Can’t be sure of the Dances With Wolves part but it will definitely be a rip-off.
I don’t really care what it rips off. Cameron was never the most original filmmaker, I’m just wondering to see how these charges of plagiarism he’s facing pan out.
That South Park episode was epic.
Honestly I’d rather see James Cameron make a film that’s a rip off of another instead of whatever shit Roland Emirch or Michael Bay gets green lit.
I honestly didn’t put to and to together, until the end, when they showed Cartmen standing outside the theatre in front of the Avatar sign. The whole time with the Smurfs I was like “What the Dice . . . ?” And then the end came, and I was like “brilliant”
Jeremy it definitely surprised me as well, hence epic episode.
Yeah, the comparison is quite a stretch, just because Troy and what’s-his-face say so doesn’t make it so. Sure, I’m sure it’s a rip-off of something, but For a Few Dollars More was a rip-off of Yojimbo, that doesn’t mean that Leone is a hack nor that the film sucks. Therefore …
Samantha….Wolves in Space?
please, pleas…I am honestly saying this as a total 100% prick….Please. I’m begging what? That I hope you are kidding. If you are not, that script better be….nevermind
HA! I just watched the episode this thread is based on!!!!! IT was freaking funny!!!
The visuals were great, but the movie’s plot to me seemed like an empty rehash of previous films.
Star Wars is still better, (Not the prequels of course).
ditto ’Dances with Wolves is not a wholly original plot. Check out Carroll Ballard’s Never Cry Wolf ’
Instead of the Caribou stampede scene we have buffalo, etc etc
. . . also see Sam Fuller’s Run of the Arrow.
see also Arthur Penn’s LITTLE BIG MAN.
see also Delmer Daves Broken Arrow (1950)
I dont agree, and then again who cares, every movie has something from other movies thats how mankind is built, copying each other but also improving
Its not the copying that was the problem, it was the suckage.
Being a good bricoler is underrated.
…and ‘Dances With Wolves’ smacks of ‘Emerald Forest’ and yada yada yada… The concept is nothing new.
I actually saw more parallels to ‘Dune’, but in the end, the basic point has been made over and over again that there is nothing original in ’Avatar’s’ story. This is no revelation. However, Cameron’s depth of field utilizing 3D and the creation of the forest itself WERE fairly innovative (if you’re into that sort of stuff)… I would contend that ‘Avatar’ is more driven by a collection of setpieces rather than a story, so the lack of originality in that field is inconsequential to Cameron’s endgame. He does create an impressive spectacle, but the movie does feel a bit empty.
I guess it all depends on what you go for.
I wrote a parody of Avatar where the tribal society was trying to knock down their ancient forest, and the foreign company ‘CovetCo’ wouldn’t let them because it would interfere with their tourism industry. The idealistic guy from Earth tried to come to their rescue by sabotaging CovetCo’s ships.
In the end, the aliens made a deal with CovetCo. They realized, they could move a person’s soul from one body to another, and CovetCo could make bodies, so they teamed up to go into the immortality business. The planet then became an economic super power.

Think about it…
