Avatar vs Fantastic planet

Some people said on this forum that avatar was similar to princess monokoke which i agree with them but, if you see the strange animals, plants, the way we learn their lives on fantastic planet, the opposition between the two clans, there’s a great similitude between these two films. Did anyone else found that similitude when you saw avatar ?

First, a little disclaimer: Do not find this argument to be ad hominem. This is just the latest thread in a growing trend at comparisons.

What does it matter if one film is similar to another? It doesn’t at all. There are a number of threads wondering if Avatar is similar to Pocahontas, Princess Mononoke, Dances With Wolves, and probably more in the countless Avatar threads. My point is this, it doesn’t matter at all. Films are similar to one another, that’s a fact of cinema. Every single RomCom have the same narrative structure, but one won’t compare Sleepless in Seattle to You’ve Got Mail because they share actors and a similar narrative structure.

Film is interdependent on one another, the only films that weren’t were the 1890s period of film. From then on out, films take inspiration from one another, even if subconsciously.

Agreed. How many American westerns is Seven Samurai similar to?

The AVATAR soundtrack’s a lot less interesting than FANTASTIC PLANET….that’s for sure.

If Avatar were a variation on the theme of those earlier movies, it would not be a problem. The problem is there was no variation. Every element unfolded exactly as expected. No surprises. By the book. Yes, impressive special effects were layered on them.

Avatar should be reviewed/analysed in much the same was as How the West Was Won was: its for the presentation we bought our tickets, not the story (although it would be nice if it had less of Cameron’s awful screenwriting on show).

AVATAR shuffles a lot of elements from a lot of sources, but I’m just not seeing FANTASTIC PLANET as being one. Can you elaborate?

Two things to clarify: Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail are also made by the same director, and the films from 1890 were more interdependent upon each other than the films of today.

HOWEVER, even though I say those things, I am in perfect agreement with your argument and in fact believe my clarification supports it.

Fantastic Planet has always reminded me of Planet of the Apes. The only real similarity I can see between FP and Avatar is the fact that both contain blue aliens.
