I’ll believe it when I see it. More exciting is the news that a Herzog film might be produced by David Lynch.
I do NOT want to see Cage in a remake of BL. In fact, I categorically refuse to accept the thought of it ever happening. Just imagine him trying to shout “You rat f*ck!” to Jesus Christ and you should feel the same way about his credibility for the part.
this is one of the worst ideas (and there are many, many of them) to ooze out of Hollywood ever. maybe Zoe Lund’s spirit will appear in the nun get up and destroy them all the first day of shooting (and let Ferrara shoot it from a safe distance).

I don’t fancy Ferrara’s chances if he ever does try to take on Herzog. If Herzog survived Kinski he can survive anything.
I’m afraid that Nicolas Cage will lead the film to be bad.
I loathe Nick Cage!! Please say it isn’t true!
@Daniel
That’s good stuff. “I’ve never seen one of his movies.” That line cracked me up.
Let’s hope Cage catches pneumonia or something and drops out, so they can give the part to a real actor.
I’m of the opinion that “Bad Lieutenant” shouldn’t have been made once so to make it again and with Nicholas Cage… the mind boggles.
Well, while we’re at it, let’s ban cover versions in music too. Because hey, we’ve all heard Light My Fire destroyed. And yet, methinks sometimes both the original and the cover have something going for them (think Yael Naim and Tristan Prettyman’s takes on Toxic). Erm…really Abel. Come on. You have a cult following for an interesting but not particularly great film – made greater by Harvey’s paradoxically understated dramatic panache. If your original is good enough it’ll stand up to any rendition, as Britney’s does. Or are you cacking your pants that Werner just might show you how to suck a guy’s cock?
If this was any other director, I wouldn’t care a bit but Herzog? He’s just insane enough to make something out of this. Also it’s easy to forget but Nicolas Cage has been in a few decent movies in his life though none lately.
Why would you even suggest such a thing? Right here at Christmas too?!
According to Herzog it is not a remake. A totally different story. Never liked the first one very much. I’ve never been much impressed with Ferrara
To those of you who read French:
Herzog has a great, long interview in this month’s issue of Cahiers du Cinéma (in connection with the lifetime retrospective of his work over the next 2 months at the Pompidou Center in Paris).
In it he deals with his up-coming Hollywood film with Nick Cage, and many other topics.
To all you Cage loathers: be grateful to him, he is the one who demanded that Herzog be given the director’s chair on this one.
At the very least the man has taste!
Herzog remaking anything is bound to be, at the very least, interesting. Nothing lacking in Ferrara’s original though, I was thoroughly entranced when it came out. Nick Cage, however much I like him when he has a good role, can’t stand up to Keitel in this part…but no one could.
I don’t want to see Nicholas Cage in anything! Not anything new anyway
I saw Val Kilmer is going to be in this. He might make up for Cage. Maybe…. Why should we Cage loathers care he demanded Herzog in the director’s chair? I wouldn’t even care about this remake if Herzog didn’t work on it. It’s not like I was praying for him to get the job.
i never understood the point of remaking movies that were not very good to begin with.
Re: Chris Beauchamp’s comment. I’d much rather see remakes of bad movies than classics, maybe they’d do something good with it. I seem to remember a comedian or someone of the like say that. As for Nicolas Cage, he was a promising young actor. Wonder what happened? Love alot of Herzog but Rescue Dawn really left me cold.
IMDB has Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans listed in post-production with good ol’ Nicolas Cage. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1095217/ (ewwww, a shiver just went down my back).
When I saw Werner Herzog in the BFI on the 26th of Jan. 2009, he made it clear that he has not seen the original and this project is not, I repeat on his behalf — is NOT, a remake! this was a clear point that he felt very important, so important that he addressed a certain person in the audience regarding this mistake.
I hope Cage doesn’t wear his stupid hair extensions. God I hate seeing even the trailers of Bangkok Dangerous, Next, etc, when he has all that floppy rat hair.
I didn’t mind BAD LIEUTENANT. Granted I was in high school, and saw it alongside RESERVOIR DOGS.
I just remember Keitel puking on himself in the nude, crying, doing coke and whiskey, praying, and forgettable gansta rap dubbed over Kashmir by Zepplin that had to be edited out due to copyright infringment. Oh and nun rape. Sounds like it might hold up. I must add to my queue before the Cage version comes out.
I’m gonna cry…. HERZOG WHY!!!???
i know, it sounds gastly——but then again——cannot judge until it’s viewed.
i dislike any remakes, however, HERZOG? This pro and con have to be “something” (particularly THE BAD LIEUTENANT?) I CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE. and cannot await to see it.
If there is one director in all of cinema that I have absolute faith in, it’s Herzog. This film will be great.
“Shoot him again, his souls still dancing,” may be the greatest line ever. It took me about 20 views of the trailer, but I’m convinced this is fun. So Herzog took the paycheck and had fun with this one. It’s not long until we get “My Son My Son, What Have Ye Done?” anyway.
“Shoot him again, his souls still dancing,” may be the greatest line ever.
I’ll second that.
I just watched the trailer , and I have to wonder if this is a marketing ploy like “Snakes on a Plane” without the foregoing internet buzz; that if we all get behind it and start chatting it up ironically, it’ll be a niche hit. It seems to be a hamfest with Cage on full throttle. The presence of Val Kilmer ensures we are wading into serious B-movie territory.
This film’s only semblance to the original seems to be an amoral lieutenant who does what he wants and gets his work done by being a drug-addled cowboy-jackass. That said, I’ll definitely rent it in 18 months.
James Grandison
Any thoughts on Werner Herzog remaking BAD LIEUTENANT with Nicolas Cage?
I’d love to know what Herzog is saying about it.
