It’s part of the Warner catalog. You can try, but you’re probably wasting your time. I agree that the film deserves a better release, but it just won’t be Criterion.
it’s worth a try.
Wasn’t Downhill Racer part of the Warner catalog?
With Days of Heaven already in the Collection and The Thin Red Line coming soon, it’s not a bad idea.
^^yeh, but i just can’t see it happening though.
Can’t wait to see Thin Red Line on blu-ray.
that’s so odd this topic came up. i just watched the movie for the first time ever this weekend.
I watched it again a few days ago and loved it even more, I thought the print was perfectly fine, I doubt you’d get much extras with Malick being the weirdo recluse that he is so is a Criterion release really worth it?
There were great bonus features on Days of Heaven, and Malick didn’t do anything for it, was that worth a criterion release? Absolutely. So is badlands worth a criterion release despite Malicks absents, absolutely.
If The Tree of Life is a big enough hit later on this year I’m sure Warner Bros wouldn’t mind making a blu-ray edition of this film with a new transfer to coincide with the Tree of Life blu-ray when it finally gets around. Keep your fingers crossed.
maybe if enough people ask criterion…
i thought the same of “the thin red line” and now its coming
truly GOD is good with Israel…
Yeah, I want to see this happen.
“maybe if enough people ask criterion…”
It’s likely more a matter of if can Warner be coerced into licensing it to Criterion. Regardless, let’s at least get a good BD release of this done soon.
The Criterion Collection hinted on their Facebook page that Badlands may be coming this year.
Not a huge fan of Malick, but most of his films do deserve the criterion treatment.
this is great news Jedidarrick. Would love to hear Sheen’s thoughts on his performance today. That and an awesome transfer.
Criterion later confirmed in the same post on facebook that the screen capture was NOT Badlands. Sorry :(

I feel this is one of the all time best American films ever made, and unfortunately it’s DVD release is not up to par. The transfer is not that great, and the bonus features are beyond weak. What i suggest is that anyone else who feels that this film deserves a criterion release, please send criterion an email in their suggestion section, suggesting badlands. If enough people ask for Badlands, who knows, maybe we will get just that.
Just go to this address, look for the suggestion section and let them know.
