You gotta have Neil Young’s On the Beach in there; it contains his masterpiece “Ambulance Blues”. You gotta move Supertramp down the list (or replace the very good Breakfast in America – well, it has “Child of Vision”, doesn’t it? – with the excellent Even in the Quietest Moments). You gotta gotta gotta put The Hissing of Summer Lawns in there. Veedon Fleece is a good choice, but the greatest live album ever – It’s Too Late to Stop Now – needs a place too. Dylan didn’t get the Seventies? Dylan didn’t get the Seventies? Blood on the Tracks is the second greatest album of the that fantastic decade. And damnit! You didn’t even include the best!
Cooler, I do love It’s Too Late to Stop Now — blues at its finest.
I’m bored with most of what they play on Class Rock Radio, hence my list has more punk, more fusion, more singersongwriter stuff. Ones that almost made the cut and maybe should have —
There’s a Riot Goin’ On
Fear of Music
After the Gold Rush
Squeezing Out Sparks
Actually, Graham Parker was a hero of mine back in the day and I even saw him live once; I’m ashamed of forgetting him.
Again, with Court & Spark it’s just a personal choice — I took a road trip with that album once and it was just a beautiful time — I still think every song on that album is flawless.
Never was that big into Elvis Costello, I like a song here and there.
As far as Dylan, Idiot Wind is my all time fave song of his, and I actually prefer the version on Hard Rain to the studio cut on Blood.

I should have included Tonight’s the Night. I’ve always enjoyed Neil Young studio albums, but almost any and every live performance is better. I think he just has more energy in concert. Tonight’s the Night is as close to a live album as any studio album will ever get. It’s a drunken depression in full force, and it is amazing.
Who’s Next and Workingman’s Dead are great suggestions as well, Akira

The wealth of weird and wonderful music in Brazil during the 70’s blows my mind:
Jorge Ben – Africa Brasil (one of my all time favorites)
Jorge Ben – A Tabua de Esmeralda
Gilberto Gil/ Jorge Ben – Gil E Jorge
Between the years 1970 – 1976, Jorge Ben could do absolutely no wrong.

Chico Buarque – Construcao
Tom Ze – Estudando o Samba
Gilberto Gil – Refazenda
Walter Franco – Ou Nao
Caetano Veloso – Joia

Novos Baianos – Acabou Chorare

As for the rest of the world:
Eduardo Mateo – Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame ( acoustic guitar, candombé style percussion and voice combine to form a beautifully delicate and minimalist album from the country of Uruguay)
Comus – First Utterance (this album is not to be played in the dark)
Sibylle Baier – Colour Green (these songs were recorded in the 70’s but were never released until a few years ago)
Funkadelic – Maggot Brain
Wire – Pink Flag / Chairs Missing
The Ramones – Rocket to Russia

Shaft – The soundtrack
Frankie Dymon Jr. – Let it Out
Tomaz Pengov – Odpotovanja (look for this album online, you won’t regret it)
Lubomyr Melnyk – KMH – Piano Music in the Continuous Mode (no other person on the planet could make an album like this)
Colin Blunstone – One Year ( when Colin’s voice is paired with those sparse arrangements….)
The Beach Boys – Sunflower
The Beach Boys – Surf’s Up (those last three songs….)
This Heat – s/t (paving the way for the 80’s)
Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures
Bulent Ortacgil – Benimle Oynar Misin (sounds a bit like a Turkish Belle and Sebastian)
Gerard Manset – La Mort D’Orion
Kim Jung Mi – Now
The Stooges – Raw Power
I could go on and on.
Man, yall are super-white.
Any 70s list without several Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, or Michael Jackson is bogus. I can’t take you seriously.
Alfredo: Estudando o Samba is actually the greatest album ever.
Kenji: Having just seen Saura’s Fados, I’m desperate to get my hands on that Rodrigues.
.
Brian, glad you like fado, Amalia is tops. Com que Voz was quite a late album, before her voice declined, her best collection is Art of Amalia i think. I don’t know if i have much musical credibility for liking Elton- though of course many see him from the wrong end of time’s telescope or judge on side issues- but i also like the Brazilian classic Elis and Tom , by Elis Regina and Antonio Carlos Jobim. I find many hyped or famous albums don’t do so much for me as i expected. I must be a very boring old fart. Oh i liked The Stranglers, eg Rattus Norvegicus at one time, and a couple more by Springsteen, The Wild the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle and Darkness on the Edge of Town, oh and Elton’s Tumbleweed Connection is pretty good. The trouble is Elton and Bruce were initially album artists who became megastars and went more MOR- whereas the Beatles were megastars and then became more experimental.
In the pop-rock industry being uncool is a kiss of death (is a hair transplant so much worse than hair dye?) but the music should be judged on its own merits. We don’t judge Beethoven and Mozart on their looks or personalities. There’s too much notice of what’s in fashion. Bowie was always cool and announcing he was bisexual was just another notch in being an exotic outsider, appealing to his fan base, but Elton being bisexual or gay was a big career burden, probably more than ever. I see Johnny Rotten now makes ads for butter and has been on Celebrity Get me out of Here etc, Mick Jagger plays the rebel but is a cricket and establishment wannabe, Bryan Ferry seems to see himself as asome sort of country gent and like Roger Daltry supports fox-hunting. Image is too important, and often conflicts with reality.
I’m just going through the “albums” list on my iPod. Some of them I’ll probably get the decade wrong on. I’m sure I’ll leave out lots. Oh well. Some of these are EPs or 12"s or whatever, too, because fuck it.
