I’ll go with Viridiana ’s “Last Supper,” an earthy parody of DaVinci long before Altman and Mel Brooks did the same.
The dream sequence in “Los Olvidados” is magnificent, in which a hungry little boy dreams of the mother who deserted him … holding out meat. Also, the scene in “El” where the crazed lead character goes to church and thinks everyone is laughing at him.
First thing that I thought of was (eglish translation) The Golden Age? Its been years but I remember some guy getting kicked in the ass several times. I was watching it at school w/ headphones and caused such a scene with my laughter. Can anyone clarify what exactly I am talking abut it really slipped my mind.
yeah the eye cutting scene in Un chien andalou
I love the dinner party scene from The Phantom of Liberty where instead of chairs at the table there are toilets.
Also noteworthy: the scene in Simon of the Desert where Satan (Silvia Pinal in a beard) drop-kicks a lamb.
Ah, I think my favorite would be in Phantom of Liberty when the chief of police meets the chief of police
and they accept each other immediately.
I agree with Tom, the last supper scene in Viridiana is unforgettable.
I’ll say that heartbreaking fight between the kids and the blind street musician in LOS OLVIDADOS. Also the scene in PHANTOM OF LIBERTY where the police and parents are discussing the description of a missing girl, while the girl is in the same room! Tom, good call on the Last Supper scene in VIRIDIANA.
In Subida al Cielo, where Bunuel stages his one and only Mexican folkloric dance (he despised them in films) and has a busload of American tourists crash it.
the eye scene in Un Chien Andalou
also, the end scene in the above movie
also also, the scene in That Obscure Object of Desire when Mathieu is beating Conchita.
Agree. “Phantom of Liberty” sitting toilet seats at the dining table and having a meal in the restroom. Or the guests sitting at the dinner table only to realize that once the curtains open up,they are on stage and they run off frantically.
The dog scene in “Viridiana”…
I really like the monks and s&m scene in Phantom of Liberty. The toilet/meal scene is a goodie in that too.
toe-sucking in l’age d’or lol
The best Bunuel scene is from his best movie: :06 to 3:15 in the following clip:
I’d have to go with the scene in Discreet Charm where he dreams he gets discovered by revolutionaries, and keeps on eating his meal.
Or, one of the scenes in Exterminating Angel where people are stopping right at the threshold of the door and making excuses not to go through.
I think any dinner party scene in a Bunuel film is excellent. I wonder if he knew how to party.
I’m not a completist, but after 20 Bunuel films seen there’s not been a bad or even poor one yet. He was one of Tarkovsky’s favourite directors which may surprise some.
Torn between the dog scene in Viridiana and the scene in Tristana, here the crippled Deneuve exposes herself on a balcony to the mute. Tristana’s probably his most underrated film as well.
I agree with Kenji. It’s impossible…
but of course, I do have a favorite….anything in TRISTANA
Viridiana’s Last Supper, of course
Last image of Nazarin, 1 image is worth more than 1000 words.
My favorite Bunuel scene has to be the one where the swarthy british dinosaur hunter realizes that the velociraptor is about to eat him…“clever girl…” (Boom). Bunuel at his best
Lucas Sifuentes
For my time it doesn’t get any better than when we see Fernando Rey risking his life to sneak lamb under the table while his friends are being shot to death in Bunuel’s ’72 gem Le Charme Discret de la Bourgeoisie.
