14 posts down and only one mention of Gregg Toland …
And none of Owen Roizman …
Sven Nykvist, Gregg Toland, Hiroshi Segawa, Masao Nakabori, Pin Bing Lee, Slawomir Idziak, Mikhail Kaufman, Charles Burnett, Tonino Delli Colli, John Alcott, Rudolph Maté, Yuuharu Atsuta, Alexander Hammid, Wei-han Yang and Peter Zeitlinger. These guys have left indelible frames in my head.
there were other threads on this?
Xaver Schwarzenberger’s black&white work in Vernonika Voss is spectacular.
in particular for me, Freddie Francis’ b/w Cinemascope photography for the Jack Clayton THE INNOCENTS, with Deborah Kerr. Still breaktaking today for me.
fully agree christopher about not mentioning Owen Roizman
Deakins and Zsigmond
Many of the greats have been covered, but I’ll add Albert Maysles (Godard called him the “best American cameraman.”)
I’m shocked only 2 people said Christopher Doyle. He’s one of my all time favorites.
Emmanuel Lubezki and Christopher Doyle (just for you Austin)
Rodrigo Prieto immediately comes to mind…. as does Alexis Zabe
>>14 posts down and only one mention of Gregg Toland<<
And only one of Lucien Ballard.
And none of Hal Mohr or Arthur Edeson or John Mescall or StanleyCortez or James Wong Howe or George Robinson or Floyd Crosby …
Short memories around here.
Ok, I don’t get you guys. Everybody throws in some great candidates but someone always has to gripe that their particular DoP has not received enough love.
Post you favourites and be done with it.
