A bout de souffle (Breathless)
With such an embarrassment of riches, it’s quite impossible for me to choose one. If I were held at gunpoint, though, I might desperately squeal out “Beehive!!” or, equally quickly, “Panchali!!” Not completely sure. I guess we’d have to try it out and see. ;-)
Breathless – Godard
Reservoir Dogs – Tarantino
Eraserhead – Lynch
Hard Eight – PT Anderson
Following – Nolan
Finally caught up with Oshima’s A Town of Love and Hate the other day. Whew! It’s not as formally or politically radical (or in your face) as some of his later films, but it is powerful nonetheless. And what struck me most about it is that though it is politically charged, it lacks the political specificity that would mark much of his work in the 60’s (Night and Fog in Japan, Death by Hanging). It is universally accessible in the way that the best Italian neo-realist films are, even when connected to the issues of the day. And I think that it serves as a nice examination of the crossroads between charity, poverty, class differences, pride, etc.
From the lists above: 12 Angry Men – Sidney Lumet.
Snowtown was incredible. For those of you not from Australia i can tell you that Snowtown contained the most accurate portrayal of the Australian criminal underclass I’ve seen in a movie.
Clerks was a good debut too.
