does the Sting count?
I know I’ve mentioned this film ad nauseum but I don’t care, I love it!
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (the original of course)
Certainly not the best but David Mamet’s ‘Heist’ is pretty cool.
Nice call on ‘The Hot Rock’.
‘Band of Outsiders’ is up there too, but I prefer it for the first half hour; probably the best character introductions I’ve ever seen on film.
The Bank Job with Jason Statham
How to Steal a Million with Audrey Hepburn
Dog Day Afternoon – Al Pacino
Point Break – Keanu Reeves
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels – Guy Ritchie Film
Rock N Rolla – Guy Ritchie Film
The Insider – Clive Owen
Hope this fills in some gaps.
I forgot about Kelly’s Heroes It has to be up there in the top
To name a recent film, The Brothers Bloom was kinda a quasi-heist movie, I enjoyed it very much.
Charley Varrick
The Lavender Gang
League of Gentlemen
The Silent Partner
Dollar$
Kaleidoscope
Duffy
Flawles
The Italian Job
The Anderson Tapes is a cool, little seen film from the 70s directed by Sidney Lumet. Martin Balsam’s performance is classic!
“The Getaway”
Gotta throw some Steve McQueen in there…and Ali MacGraw, mmmm….
The Asphalt Jungle of course
I really liked the recent INSIDE MAN.
Heat
The Killing
Dog Day Afternoon
The Taking of Pelham 123 (1973)
Oceans 11 (original)
Straight Time. Underrated 70’s classic.
I’m a bit surprised to not see Resevoir Dogs. It’s certainly my favorite film from Tarentino.
Kaleidoscope (excellent heist scene during the first five minutes)
The Anderson Tapes
Grand Slam (Edward G., Klaus Kinski)
Big Deal on Madonna Street (it’s funny, so is Louis Malle’s remake)
The Italian Job (both versions)
Gambit (Michael Caine and a very funny Shirley MacLaine)
My favs – The Killing, Reservoir Dogs, The Score
Other great heists:
The Asphalt Jungle
Inside Man
Heat
Oceans Eleven
THE LADYKILLERS (1955). I never bothered with the remake. THE LAVENDER HILL MOB is also being remade, hopefully without Marlon Wayans.
It might not technically be a heist move but Paul Schrader’s Blue Collar takes some beating. The opening titles are brilliant, a real fetishisation of blue collar life. The actual heist itself has an endlessly hilarious moment in it. Great underrated film.
Le Cercle Rouge
Gambit
The Killing
Heist
As a movie, Jackie Brown is nearly perfect, as a pure heist movie, not as much.
Charley Varrick…..
which means I didn’t add a single film to the discussion. Good to know everyone has such good taste.
it’s sorta a heist flick….. “The Underneath” by Soderbergh. Very under rated flick.
to Mike 9.5….. totally agree with “Blue Collar”. It’s one of my favorite Scharder films. I’m dying for that to come out again on dvd….. Criterion?
I second BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET.
Also,
The Killing
Out of Sight
Topkapi
The original 1974 The Taking of Pehlam 1, 2, 3, the French Connection, and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch (a.k.a Lock, Stock Part 2), and the Usual Suspects
Charlie Varrick
Point Blank
Heat
Usual Suspects
Dog Day Afternoon
I have yet to see Rififi, but it is near the top of my ‘To Watch’ list.
Thanks everyone. Looked up Charlie Varrick and it sounds very good so I ordered it, and while I was there was reminded of Hopscotch also with Walter Matthau so ordered that too.
The Getaway will always be my favorite, Steve McQueen is just too damn cool.
Kelly’s Heroes
Dog Day Afternoon
Reservoir Dogs
Heat
The Bank Job
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
since it probably won’t get mentioned , I’ll add Henri Verneuil’s The Sicilian Clan
I don’t think the likes of Reservoir Dogs and Dog Day Afternoon fall in the heist category. They are great Crime movies, but they put no effort into organizing and planning out these robberies (instead they focus on other aspects), and in Reservoir we dont even see it take place.
Some of my favorites are …..
Heist
After the Sunset
Charley Varrick
The Hot Rock
Inside Man
The Italian Job
Ocean’s 11
The Killing
Quick Change (which is hilarious)
The Score
Sneakers
The Taking of Pelham 123
Thief
Thomas Crown Affair
Flawless
Kelly’s Heroes
Entrapment
Rififi
Bob Le Flambeur
The Silent Partner
Ronin (not sure if it falls in the heist category)
I loved McQueen and Dunaway in THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968).
McBean
One of my favourite type of movies is the heist film. Some of my favourites are:
Rififi (Jules Dassin – 1955)
The Killing (Stanley Kubrick – 1956)
Le Cercle Rouge (Jean-Pierre Melville – 1972)
The Hot Rock (Peter Yates – 1972)
A Man A Woman And A Bank (Noel Black – 1979)
Any other recommendations for really good heist movies?
