Before someone lashes out – I know, I know – there’s already a thread for this. Sorry – I promise from now on to start using the search box.
Darjeeling Limited
OK people, don’t kill me for this: The Polar Express
Days of Heaven and Darjeeling Limited
How about Strangers on a Train and North By Northwest?
Some goodies:
North by Northwest (Hitch loved trains, like many British. Ozu was another train man)
The General
Das Stahltier (little known German film from the 30s)
Closely Observed Trains
La Bete Humaine
Night Train (Kawalerowicz)
The Train
Shanghai Express
Dumbo
some great films like L’Avventura, Pather Panchali and Late Spring have trains, but without being train films
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
For A Few Dollars More
Once Upon A Time In the West
Btw, why films with trains in them?
Murder on the Orient Express
“Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train”
of course!!!!!!
Horror Express (best of the non-Hammer Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing teamings)
Julia
Once Upon a Time in the West
Some Like it Hot
North by Northwest (if only for that final shot)
Oddest: JP Melville’s train heist by helicopter scene in Un Flic
Narrow Margin (1952)
Runaway Train
The Seven Per-Cent Soluition
The Station Agent
Some excellent choices and Lester I think Polar Express is a great movie. I’ll add Bridge on the River Kwai.
“Brief Encounter”, easliy.
No one’s said Mystery Train yet?! Was it too obvious?
And Le Cercle rouge?
Under Siege 2: Dark Territory
Spike Lee’s Clockers, in which the drug-dealing anti-hero is both a hardcore, gangsta thug from the hardest of hoods, and a train enthusiest. somehow, Mekhi Phifer makes this work without it looking silly or like an add-on. this cat REALLY loves trains! probably something that links him to the innocence of his childhood or some shit…i need to watch that movie again.
Henry Jagolm’s Tracks with Dennis Hopper! GO hunt that movie down and watch it. Its a great film its like an Ashby film or a Raeflson movie. Wes Anderson fans will like it :D
Silver Streak
not long ago I saw a film with Woody Harrelson and Ben Kinglsey and it took place in Russia, and it was a really good thriller, with a kinda weak ending. What’s the title….?
8 1/2
since no one has mentioned it yet, Cafe Lumiere.
Andrei Konchalovsky’s RUNAWAY TRAIN
Stations of the Elevated (Manfred Kirchheimer) — original old school graffiti film predating the birth of hip hop culture as we know it now. Amazing soundtrack by Charles Mingus. You want trains? This is all about trains. And graffiti. And isolation. And industrial NY in the late 70s.
A haunted work of visual poetry.
This a pointless exercise. Most good movies have a train.
Tokyo Drifter
hahaha Orpheus is right.
Well, yes there could equally be a thread on best film without a train in it. Anyway, it does give a chance for me to mention a short film on youtube, Fast Film, by Widrich, which is not only a film with a train in it, but has a train with a film (more than one) in it.
Cars feature a lot in films as well. And semi-naked women. And bank robberies. And guns. What’s the best film with a semi-naked woman, a car, a bank robbery and a gun in it? Actually don’t answer that question. The boards are spammed to death with lists as it is.
Christopher, why did you ask this train question in the first place?
Tokyo Story
Late Spring
There was a Father
How am I the first one to mention Ozu? Actually Kenji mentioned Late Spring, but still…
PICKPOCKET
The scene with the switch off…
treated.
Christopher Langford
Planes,Trains, Automobiles – I don’t think so. The Lady Vanishes – no. Europa, High and Low – maybe.
