Best Picture Oscar 2009

Jim W

This isn’t really asking what you think was the best movie in 2008, but what film do you think the academy believes to be the best film from 2008?

I’m interested in seeing how Dark Knight does because usually hype has a big influence.

Steve Oerkfitz

I think Slumdog Millionare will beat out Dark Knight. The Oscar voters tend to not like more action orientated films. I think they will award Dark Knight by giving a supporting Oscar to Heath ledger.

Acadamy- “Slumdog”. I would personally say “The Wrestler”, although Rourke will win best actor and Aronofsky best director.

Haven’t seen Slumdog or The Wrestler yet but the best movie I’ve seen come out this year that is an Oscar type film is definitely Revolutionary Road. Synecdoche was quite amazing but that will most definitely be disregarded.

Nikhil

The nominees will be announced tomorrow, yes?
I too think Revolutionary Road will be the Academy’s choice – I want it to be.
Slumdog Millionaire is certainly no best-picture material, though Danny Boyle truly deserves a Best Director win. I think its a safe bet that Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Score will be won respectively by Simon Beaufoy and A.R. Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire. Or is it? They might just give Slumdog Millionaire the Best Picture, and save Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Sam Mendes and Justin Haythe.

These things can be very political sometimes.

The Academy has started to turn it around over the past two years, choosing The Departed and No Country For Old Men, in comparison to picks like Chicago, Million Dollar Baby, and Crash in other recent years. There really isn’t a standout awards film I’m pulling for this year so, so as long as Slumdog doesn’t win I’ll be happy.

I want Slumdog to win, and judging by its momentum I think it has a very good chance

SLUMDOG will win because it’s won everything else and the Academy is sentimental and informed by politics. The Mumbai attacks, the foreign flavor, the “indie darling” factor, and the underdog factor will almost guarantee it. Besides, they almost always manage to give the Best Picture award for a film that isn’t, and SLUMDOG, well, isn’t. Remember that shitbomb called CRASH?

Tommy

I’m pretty sure it will be as most of the recent award shows will be. They’ll include Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire, Vicky Christina Barcelona, and I can’t remember is there was a fifth nomination, but it’ll probably be Doubt or Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I’ve only seen Revolutionary Road and Vicky Christina Barcelona. Both of which are great films in their own way. To choose between to the two would be very difficult.

Slumdog will not win. It’s indian, for chrissakes. Althought filmed in english, the foreigness of thefilm will likely have voters turn the other way.

The Wrestler deserves a best actor nomination, but there really isn’t greatness abound this year…

I’ll go with Revolutionary road. Good film.

Brett Hendricks

If I were to choose, I would select The Wrestler or Synecdoche New York, but I have the feeling the Academy will pick Revolutionary Road.

Judging by the precursors: Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, Frost/Nixon, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Dark Knight. This selection is unanimously supported by the PGA, DGA and Ace Eddie. These three important indicators are unanimous. Leaving little room for “Doubt.”

Who cares? It won’t be Burn After Reading.

Most of the choices like last years awards are predictable and also because not many outstanding movies/performances came in this year.

Actor – tough choice between Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn, I also love the nominations of Brad and Leo.
Actress – Its high time Kate Winslet won one.
Movie – could be Revolutionary Road but I sense Slumdog Millionaire pulling it off only hitch is its sweet ending…
Director – Danny Boyle or Sam Mendes, a David Fincher win would never hurt.
Slumdog ofcourse will win for musical score.

i think “curious case of benjamin button” will either win the best picture or the best director.
i m hoping a nom for “TDK” and will be very dissapointed if heath ledger doesn’t win

Slumdog Millionaire is a very average movie to any Indian/Pakistani. It is the typical masala we are so used to. I’d rather the oscar goes to Burn After Reading than Slumdog Millionaire, although I haven’t seen the other front-runners.

Agree with Nikhil, Boyle deserves a (serious) Best Director consideration.

It sounds like An Education has a decent shot at “Best Picture Oscar 2009”, according to Sundance buzz, at least.

Robert Hamilton

Some slightly cynical predictions…

Frost/Nixon will win Best Picture. Not that it should, but it will.
Sam Mendes will win Best Director.
Sean Penn will win Best Actor.
Anne Hathaway will win Best Actress — remember, this is the Academy.
Heath Ledger will NOT be nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
Slumdog Millionaire will win for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona will win for Best Original Screenplay.

I do not believe that these SHOULD be the winners, but it’s entirely plausible that this is how it will shake out.

Steve Oerkfitz

Robert=I can’t see Heath Ledger not being nominated.I think that ones a given.

troy myers

sally hawkins deserves at least a nomination if not an outright win for happy-go-lucky. incredible job channelling dingbat commideinnes of the past like judy holiday and gracie allen.

Steve Oerkfitz

Troy-I seem to be in a minority here but I thought Sally Hawkins character was unbearable in Happy Go Lucky(The only Mike Leigh Ive never liked). I just wanted to throw something at her. She remined me too much of the ditzy neighbor on a bad sitcom.

troy myers

steve, my new friend,i think that is part of the brilliance in the role, as i thought that poppy was a fairly intelligent person that used her ditziness as a coping mechanism in the face of a cruel world. but then again mike leigh can do NO wrong in my eyes and i might just be taking on the role of apologist.

Steve Oerkfitz

Troy-I’m a big fan of Leigh but I just couldn’t stand this character. I went with 4 other people and we all felt the same way. I know a lot of people love this film and the reviews were generally good. Just didn’t work for me.

I want very badly to see ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ win (after the Sooners and Eagles flamed out, it’s really all I’ve got left to root for). I personally think it was an amazing film and will probably remain one of my all-time favorites for years to come. I also think it probably will win but I have an uneasy feeling it might lose out to ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ which although a good film with some great performances, is to my mind not deserving of a best picture nomination. The ending felt like a cheat and the whole excercise left me cold and unsatisfied.

Robert Hamilton

Steve, Ledger SHOULD be nominated. I hope he is. But the Academy has an odd history of snubs and surprises. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s snubbed.

Kazu Watanabe

Robert: Why no love for Anne Hathaway? I thought she was excellent in RACHEL GETTING MARRIED.

Justin Biberkopf

They might give actor to Clint Eastwood because he’s been around a while and I don’t think he’s ever one an actor Oscar.

Trevor

Slumdog for Best Picture
Penn for Best Actor
Streep for Best Actress
Tomei for Best Supporting Actress
Ledger for Best Supporting Actor

___ _____

If Eddie Marsan doesn’t win the supporting actor oscar then I think I’ll continue to avoid the oscars like the plague, but if he does win I’ll slip them a little credibility by actually looking up the next day who won, but not by tuning in.

aoaijea

I know what shall happen! Everything predictable that we think will happen is going to happen! Unless a movie that has merit actually wins best picture, a director who showed more talent than ability to tell a story straight from the page wins best whatever, and an actor named Mickey Rourke wins best something. Otherwise, it’s all smoke and mirrors. They stopped going off course after Chariots of Fire.
