I fear you’re right.
I’d rather see the other heavy contender, THE HURT LOCKER, take BP, but even that would not be my pick for best of the year.
i may actually switch to hurt locker for prediction… avatar didn’t get a screenplay nomination after all… though neither did Titanic.
This is going to come down to the Avatar momentum vs. the Avatar backlash. Fortunately the backlash seems to be coalessing around one film (The Hurt Locker.) Right now money is king and Avatar seems unbeatable, but there is a possibility that, as it becomes inevitable, more voters will note what a flawed and shallow film it really is and be convinced to switch to Hurt Locker.
BTW, my actual pick, although it has no chance to win, is Inglorious Basterds.
