I agree with Wrath of Khan and First Contact heading the list; but I just wanted to ask: was anyone else out there sitting with bated breath in a jam-packed theater on opening night in ‘79 for Robert Wise’s ponderous The Motion Picture? I was 13 years old, and though the movie was much more abstract than way expected/hoped, it was an enormous event for all the little geeks (and bigger ones, too, I suppose).
I loved The Motion Picture. Call me odd. Not the best of the series. But I do enjoy popping it in the DVD player from time to time.
in all honesty, because i’ve heard so little good about it, i’ve never bothered to see that first film. maybe i’ll love it, but it just hasn’t crossed my mind. i also never saw the last of the Next Generation movies, and every time i tell myself i should i just skip it. no real reason for any of this, mind you…
as far as best series? its easy to mock the original, but when re-watched with an open mind and bearing IN mind it was the 1960s, the stories and messages of that first three seasons were incredibley well done and way ahead of its time. i mean shit—Dr. King asked Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show because it meant that Black People would be apart of the future of this world. during the height of the Space Race/Cold War, you had a Russian at the helm! it was a rather good series that doesn’t get the respect it deserves, even from its fans.
…with that said, i really liked the last two or three seaons of Deep Space Nine. they were exciting, and Capt. Siscko was a more dynamic and complex character than Kirk or Piccard.

The Voyage Home.
I watched reruns of the original series as a kid but hadn’t seen any of the movies until this new one. I just walked of out in a state of complete geeky happiness. I’ve never seen a better justification for the concept of reinventing a franchise. This was pitch perfect with a great script and if J.J. Abrams and the writers are committed to it, I hope they make half a dozen more of these. Damnit, Jim, that was a great fucking movie!

Wrath of Khan
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is the best. This new one looks like a typical Hollywood outing, over the top special effects, cast of sex icons, and just enough storyline to carry you from one CGI sequence to the next.

This new one was very cool. In the film the word Cheat comes up a few times. That is what JJ did. And it worked. An Alt reality is the only to please the ST freaks. Of which i am one.

The new film IS very good, but I’d have to say Wrath of Khan gets first prize, simply due to the original members being in it (gotta be loyal somehow to the originals), and it’s also so well directed, acted and just gets moving right away and doesn’t let up – kinda like the new film! Hmmm. Seems they learned something, these new kids.
While the story to Star Trek III is pretty good, the film is NOT well directed, and doesn’t hold up well. It also looked kinda cheap in the effects department, which is kinda strange after the slickness of Khan. It’s something I rediscovered upon buying the DVD recently and watching it again. Coming after a re-screening of Khan, Search for Spock was a disappointment in comparison – though I did enjoy it when it came out originally.
The Voyage Home is still great. A fine script, and still a lot of fun. After that, I kinda lost interest in the series, and didn’t really see those other films, except I think First Contact, which I do recall was pretty good (despite having a character named Worf).
But yeah, the new Star Trek movie was definitely good. Better than I expected it to be. A few shaky-cam moments which were a bit distracting, but it had a solid script, acting and effects, and JJ Abrams did a damn fine job with it, I have to say.

I liked the Abrams film well enough (great casting – could not have been better!)—but Nicholas Meyer’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is still tops. BUT – now that Abrams is past the obligatory first, establishing film in the new franchise, he can get on with the action (like Bryan Singer with X2)

Maybe not opening night, but within the first week.
Found it a big disappointment, but I grew to like it better in the TV cut, which restored a lot of the dialogue that was jettisoned to make way for the expensive special effects (I thought that shuttle trip around the Enterprise would never end) & keep the running time down to 2 hours.
Until I saw the new one a couple of weeks ago I would have said the 4th one – Voyage Home. In fact I would have said it was the ONLY good one. I found it hilarious.
Yeah, IV The Voyage Home is the most enjoyable of the lot. First Contact tried too hard, in parts, to drum up some fun…
