If you watch carefully, you can see him blink after he is dead in BOYS FROM BRAZIL.

Does any actor have a more bizarre back-to-back as Steve Guttenberg? Can’t Stop the Music followed by Diner!?!?!

My vote is for Diner anyway. I like The Boys from Brazil too…he’s like a Hardy Boy meeting Mengele.
Good call Francisco on The Bedroom Window…that was Curtis Hanson I believe.

Without a doubt, THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE (1983). A truly insane movie.

I once got into a bet over who was the number one box office star of the 1980s – Harrison Ford or Steve Guttenberg. I think I was going with Ford but the fact that this bet could even be made must mean something. Guttenberg made some bad career choices perhaps – I believe I remember reading he was offered and turned down the lead in Big as well as a part in Ghostbusters – but he had a certain charisma that I remember fondly from my misspent childhood (misspent = having Police Academy I through IV on one worn out EP tape). He played the knowing anti-authority wisecracking smartass probably better than most of his ilk and was probably one of the more unlikely Hollywood box office draws this side of Richard Dreyfuss.

Uh, didn’t Three Men and a Little Lady come out, like, twenty years ago? Maybe they’re working on Three Men and a Married Woman?

Dennis Brian

Boys from Brazil

Ari

Ah, I see. It must be hard to come up with a title for a film that starts with Three Men and ends with some variation of a woman and doesn’t sound like a porn film.

I can’t believe that the incredible auteur voice that is Nancy Walker isn’t more widely recognized for her direction of “Can’t Stop the Music”.

i still say “it takes two”

Lester Burnham

Boys from Brazil and Diner. They were the ONLY good movies he was in, imo.

I see this thread is from over two years ago. Wouldn’t that be the heyday of “The Auteurs” when all the great discussions that we’re not having anymore were going on?

Brentos

yes. i started it my freshman year of college as a half-troll/half-serious thread. it ended up just becoming a good discussion about a generally overlooked actor.

Brentos

and that was about 5 years ago, not 2 >_<

I enjoyed him playing himself on an episode of Party Down. I was shocked at how ripped he was.

I also stand by my initial assessment of his career.

And you can’t tell me that Ay Lav Yu doesn’t sound mildly intriguing:
