I bought the blu-ray 3 disc new version of Day The Earth Stood Still and the original film on blu-ray was one of the extra discs. I consider that in itself one of the best supplements.
i can think of a number of really interesting commentaries. anything herzog for example.
the phantom of the opera (1925) ultimate edition is amazing. it has two versions of the film, commentary and pretty much every fragment they could find of different version of the film released
citizen kane’s documentary about the movie
and i love it when (usually criterion) includes short films by the director. eyes without a face, last your at marienbad, breathless etc.
the commentary on chasing Amy (Oh shit he’s talkin’ bout Kevin Smith! What a bitch!) is really funny and one of the best in my opinion, but my favorites are the Kurosawa masterworks episodes on most of his criterion releases

What is the best supplement ever on a DVD?
Or at least, you’re favorite. A REALLY good one.
I’d say a contender is the commentary track for The Day the Earth Stood Still. Nicholas Meyer interviews Robert Wise and it is awesome.
