I took a look at their French New Wave program this is a part of, it’s fantastic! Let us know if you (get to) see anything else in that series!
the only early chabrol film i’ve seen is “le beau serge”. it was a horrible 16mm print. but i didnt care much for it at all. i’d like to see “les bonnes femmes” and “le cousins” to make sure it was an anomaly.
Les Bonnes Femmes is a masterpiece. A very powerful film. The Kino edition is a good print. A Double Tour (aka Web of Passion) is also great, I just watched it recently. It’s a color film and very beautifully shot.
Man, I still have yet to see this movie. I will have to add it to my list considering I’m a french new wave whore.
LES BONNES FEMMES is one of my favourite French new wave films. One of the most beautiful and at the same time frightening endings I have ever seen. This is a wonderful movie. However you have to see it, buy or rent, just see it.
Without sounding like a broken record, Chabrol’s Les Bonnes Femmes is one of my all-time favourite film, as I’ve already mentioned countless times in the forum. Luckily it’s available on Kino dvd, although there isn’t any extra features in it. Criterion someday, perhaps…
Ok everybody i just bought Les Bonnes Femmes tonight and i had better like it! I blind buy all the time.
ARGH! Thanks for rubbing it in! :-)
I’m also really excited about the new wave season at the BFI, Daniel. Did you see the fringe series next month? Chris Marker’s Le Joli Mai! Franju’s “Le Tete contre les murs”! Jean Rouch!! Doniol-Valcroze!!! Pierre Kast!!!

I have no idea how I’m going to afford all of those tickets, even with a BFI membership. I’ll let you know which ones we do manage to catch, though..
Wildfire, I’m very envious — I’d love to some Jean Rouch.
I just saw Les Bonnes Femmes and i loved it. This is coming from someone who isnt crazy about the French New Wave.
I saw Les Bonnes Femmes as part of the Austin Cinemtheque program and there were a lot of empty seats sadly. I could have saved you a seat if I knew you were coming along…har har.
Isn’t it great? The opening scenes are so gritty and sad. The isolation of those young women is really heart breaking. It’s like a totally de-romanticized portrait of Paris. And the ending, against all odds, is surprisingly beautiful.
Sorry I’ve been incommunicado on this board for the past few days – I have been busy watching films!! (although not, sadly, Les Bonnes Femmes. I’m still waiting for a cheaper DVD to become available – you lucky so-n-so’s!)
After our experience last week, we booked ahead for our tickets to see Franju’s “La Tête contre les murs” tomorrow. I’ll report back once we’ve seen it. :-)
Try to catch any Rozier if they are still playing; rare and very good.
Wildfire
So we went to the BFI the night before last to catch the last showing of Chabrol’s Les Bonnes Femmes…and it was SOLD OUT! With a queue of over thirty people on stand by!! Yikes!! That’s never happened to me before at the BFI. The James Bond film showing at the same time in a separate cinema had no line at all (!!). When did this film get to be so popular? There were three showings as well, plus two others at the Cine Lumiere.
Now I have to buy the Region 1 DVD from the States because it doesn’t seem to be available in Region 2. Grrrr….
Sorry I just had to get that off of my chest! I suppose it’s a good thing that so many people are so enthusiastic about Chabrol…
