Try The Savage Detectives (By Chilean author Roberto Bolaño). It’s one of my favorite novels of all time. Though immigration is tangential, it deals superbly with outcasts’ (poets) coming-of-age and generally, the chase, the meaningless/meaningful chase that is life. In a way, it’s circularly Borgian. You don’t know if you’re running towards life or away from it but you’re running, nevertheless (with or without scissors). Of course, one of my all time favorite coming-of-age/immigration movies is Pelle The Conqueror. But, back to books, I heard Coetzee’s “Youth” deals with these themes rather well. Haven’t read it though. I’ll put it in my never-ending to do list.
I’ve heard THE SAVAGE DETECTIVES is great! It’s a shame Bolaño’s fame is only starting to increase in the U.S. now that he has passed away. His forth coming book, FASCIST LITERATURE IN THE AMERICAS, also sounds fantastic.

I loved this movie. I was wondering if any body could suggest me books that are similiar to this movie in terms of its themes(immigration, coming-of-age,outcasts…) and story?
