I agree the films on there being their worst
I also don’t really care for the hudsucker proxy
burn after reading was a good film but really it is weak compaired to most of their other films
people who don’t like the coens don’t know shit
Hudsucker Proxy is a great film, go back and watch that one again. Rumplesink- The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty are bad, but I think those are the only bad flicks they made.
Bellwether – Yes, that’s what I said in my original post and that’s why I put a space between those two and the next one.
The Ladykillers is the only one of their films that I think is a failure. Intolerable Cruelty I thought worked for what it set out to do and The Man Who Wasn’t There I thought was exceptional.
By the way, I’ve always been a little underimpressed upon first viewing of any of the the Coen Bros films. By the third viewing I’m hooked and that’s been true for me with just about all their films.
I did not like blood simple or ladykillers IC is not something i want to watch
i agree with bobby, but my least favorite are Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers. I’d be surprised to find someone that strays too far from this sentiment. Films like Barton Fink, Fargo, and Blood Simple are some of my favorites of all time…especially Barton Fink.
There has to be overwhelming consensus here. Ladykillers is by far their worst. It’s not only a bad Coen Brothers film, it’s an awful film. Intolerable Cruelty is a bad Coen Brothers film. After that, it’s a toss up. I’d probably pick Burn After Reading. I actually enjoyed it but it did seem like the Coens were descending into self-parody with it. My stab against conventional wisdom pick would be Raising Arizona. I used to love it but I saw it again a few years ago and thought that it didn’t hold up very well.
For me, Burn After Reading, Hudsucker Proxy, The Lady Killers . . . if I had to pick a forth, it’s Raising Arizona. I guess I’m alone in thinking Intolerable Cruelty—an homage to the classic screwball comedies— is quite good?
Well (almost) everybody seems to think the same as me. I too don’t think they’ve ever made a bad film. I think Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty are their weaker films but that’s purely a relative term – I actually enjoyed both of them just fine.
1. Joel
2. Ethan
3. Shemp
1. Burn After Reading
2. Intolerable Cruelty
3. The Ladykillers
Although I don’t think any of these are necessarily BAD films. They’re just not up to par with the rest of their filmography.
I’ve honestly never really enjoyed Raising Arizona. Not that it isn’t good, it’s just never quite done it for me idk.
Intolerable Cruelty is funny as hell, but for an entry in the Coen Cannon it falls short. I can see how you could say the same for Burn After Reading, but I enjoy it enough to put it above the worst 3.
I’ve also never seen the Hudsucker Proxy, so I can’t say anything about it
so for me it’d be:
-Ladykillers
-Raising Arizona
-Intolerable Cruelty

RA???????????????????????? WAAAAHHH!!!
DANGIT!!! I hate it when your computer doesn’t work and then you look like a moron for double posting.
Oh well, I’m ok with that.
Don’t get me wrong, RA was a great screwball comedy, it just doesn’t resonate for me as much. There’s lots of movies that I think are wonderfully-made movies, but I personally don’t care for.

GRMMGMGMMMMRMRMRMMGMMRMRM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not commenting again.
I haven’t seen Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers, or A Serious Man (really want to see the latter) but my three least favorites of the others are:
1. Burn After Reading
Non-fans sometimes claim the Coens hold their audiences in contempt, but I never really felt that—maybe they treat their characters cruelly at times, but I never felt that with their audiences. Except here. Three parts funny, ninety-seven parts insulting. Not only were the characters unlikeable, they were unrelatable. (Hell, Jerry Lundegaard is a scumbag, but I pity him. Same with Barton Fink, Bernie Bernbaum, the characters in Blood Simple, etc.) The laughs are often cheap—a dildo chair? Really? I walked out with a bad taste in my mouth, like the filmmakers had been trying to shock me into laughter. I had the same feeling to an admittedly much greater extent with Bruno. This is the only Coen Bros. film I’ve seen that I’ve actively disliked.
2. The Hudsucker Proxy
I like aspects of this film just fine: Tim Robbins’ performance, the hula hoop success montage, some funny moments, some deft camerawork. But it just falls a little flat. I didn’t laugh very much; I didn’t care much about the characters. Nothing I’d care to see again. Also, I’m a bit annoyed by the deus ex machina bit.
3. The Man Who Wasn’t There
I might have liked this more if I’d seen it earlier. As it stands, it felt on first viewing (fairly recent) like a Coen film I’d seen before multiple times; man hatches mildly idiotic scheme, scheme backfires, life goes to shit. It’s shot beautifully and performances all around are pretty great (minus Scarlett). Dialogue is great. Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, and Tony Shalhoub are awesome. I’m pretty sure this would place higher if I’d seen it before Fargo, No Country, Blood Simple, etc.
1. Intolerable Cruelty
2. Lady Killers
3. Raising Arizona
Was not a fan of “Raising Arizona” or “The Big Lebowski”
Do you guys hate the Coen’s being unorganised and all over the place? I was thrown by all the ‘bad’ films mentioned here – you could call them higgledy-piggledy in a way, but I would describe it as great, bold meandering of plot. Hudsucker, Intolerably Cruelty, Raising Arizona AND The Ladykillers are all brilliant films and should not even be called their worst, just an adventure, mixing things up a bit. These films are all greatly fun, you can’t deny that at all.
Ladykillers is the obvious choice. Wasn’t a huge fan of Miller’s Crossing…
True Grit is obviously in it for me.
True Grit just has a bad ending. I cannot IMAGINE why people are putting The Man Who Wasn’t There in with ladykillers and intolerable, I love The Man, it’s the last vintage coen film!
1. Ladykillers
2. Intolerable Cruelty
3. Burn After Reading
These films are actually above average for their genre, but very far below average for the Coens, as many have already stated.
Intolerable Cruelty
Ladykillers
Fargo
McBean
I was wondering if there’s some sort of consensus among people who like the Coens’ films regarding their least favourite. A bottom three if you like. For me this is kind of tricky because I’ve liked all their films and reckon only two they’ve done are quite weak. Here’s my three anyway:
The Ladykillers
Intolerable Cruelty
The Man Who Wasn’t There
(People who just don’t like Coen Brothers’ films need not reply).
