Right now, on Amazon, you can score the 5-disc boxset of “restored” Alejandro Jodorowsky films (El Topo, Holy Mountain, Fando y Lis, among others). You get a soundtrack CD, commentaries, documentaries. I bought this when it was first released in 2007 and it’s essential, imho.
Amazon is currently selling it for — get this — $17.99
I just bought that Jodorowsky boxset! Also, in 6 days I get to open my Cassavetes boxset that I am getting for Christmas! I’ve been reading and rereading the special features list on criterion’s website for months now.
Amazon.com:
Billy Wilder Set which has 9 films and goes for over $100 is being sold for $29.99. This is a third party offering. The person I bought it from says he has two left and said they are mint and were purchased as overstock from MGM/FOX. This is a steal….better get it now though!
The Reinoir movie set is now around $16.99 (third party) – The only thing that I’m on the fence about is that this has six films on three discs, but I see a European version with like 12 and then an Asian version with 33 films. For those who bought this, please let me know how the quality is since it’s six films on 3-discs.
A seller on Amazon has the MGM Bergman box set of Persona, Shame, Passion of Anna, Hour of the Wolf, and the Serpents Egg for $29.99.
The Jodorowsky set sounds phenomenal. They are truly wondeful films.
My own recommendations are the James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart Signiture Collections.
Cagney:
Public Enemy / White Heat / Roaring Twenties / Angels With Dirty Faces
and Bogart:
Maltese Falcon / Treasure of the Sierra Madre / High Sierra / Casablanca
All classics. All magnificent.
More box set sales and for B&N just started their 50% off sale on box sets and DVD’s, if you are a member, you get a 20% off coupon. Amazon is also having a sale…and seems to be the clear winner on this sale:

Does anybody have that Jodorowsky box set? Are the soundtrack albums as great as I’m hoping they’ll be?
“The Holy Mountain” soundtrack was never released before being included with this boxset. “El Topo” soundtrack is also therein. Are they great? Well, Jodorowsky composed most of the score and both were produced by Allan Steckler.
Besides these two discs, the boxset has digital restorations of original aspect ratio presentations of the aforementioned films (with 5.1 Dolby) plus “Fando y Lis”, “La Cravate” and “La Constellation”, a 90 minute documentary on Jodorowsky’s life and art with Peter Gabriel, Marcel Marceau and Jean “Moebius” Giraud interviews. Marcel speaks!
12 days ago, this exquisite boxset was available on Amazon for $17.99. No doubt, it will soon be out-of-print and its value will skyrocket on the secondary market.
It might sound like nit-picking on my part but I wish the Jodorwosky box would have included Santa Sangre too. That’s my favorite film of his, btw.
Grief strikes the bargain-hunter’s heart…
Amazon has stopped selling the Jodorowsky boxset for $17.99. It’s back up to $34.49.
Another DVD sale just announced and, guess what, the Jodorowsky boxset is back on sale. Nearly as discounted as it was last month, it’s now $19.99.

Superb.
Thet Powell and Pressburger one’s great, I got it a couple of Christmases ago along with the David Lean Centenary Collection, containing The Sound Barrier, Hobson’s Choice, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Madeleine, The Passionate Friends, This Happy Breed and In Which We Serve.
This year I got the Ealing Studios collection: Champagne Charlie, Dead of Night, Hue & Cry, It Always Rains on Sunday, Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Ladykillers, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Maggie, The Magnet, The Man in The White Suit, Nicholas Nickelby, Passport To Pimlico, Scott of The Antarctic, The Titfield Thunderbolt, Went The Day Well? and Whisky Galore.

What a selection! The David Lean Centenary Collection is on my list, and I’ve been acruing parts of the Ealing Studio collection off ebay, many have been given away as freebies with national newspapers, so you can pick them up for under a pound. Passport to Pimlico and The Titfield Thunderbolt are winging their way to me even as we speak!
Watched The Ladykillers and Man in the White Suit a couple of days ago and they are two of Ealing’s best. Alexander Mackendrick was one of Britain’s most accomplished, if overlooked, directors, although, unfortunately, he didn’t make as many films as he should have done.
Ahh…the UK has plenty of awesome box sets. Is the Powell and Pressburger non-region…I’m guessing not. Would love to get the Ealing Studios collection.
Watched the “Charleston Parade” (Sur Un Air de Charleston) – That has to be the oddest film I have ever seen directed from Jean Renoir. I know of his love of American cinema and jazz music but either he was on some kind of narcotic or just had one wild, erotic imagination. Silent film that takes place in 2028, post-apocalyptic. A barely dressed Catherine Hessling as a Parisian savage with her ape, Johnny Hudgins, the vaudeville actor in black-face despite being an explorer and piloting an aircraft he is portrayed as a buffoon and human heads on angel bodies. I will say that Hessling’s dancing is quite intriguing.
I’m afraid the P&P is Region 2. Although it’s possible to “unlock” many DVD players. see this site

The Michael Haneke 10 Disc Collection from Artificial Eye is very good. All the feature films except The White Ribbon which isn’t out anywhere yet. Amazon UK are selling it at the very reasonable price of £48.48
USA:
Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski: A Film Legacy [6 Discs] on sale for $15.98 at Deep Discount. Also, The Films Of Alejandro Jodorwsky for $19.98.
That’s pretty cheap! Anyway, it’s sold out but add it to your cart. Usually takes them about two weeks to get more in but you won’t be charged (paypal or credit card) until they ship it out.
UK:
For those in the US may want to look at the non-region Blu-ray releases for Bourne set which is $26-28 (UK), much cheaper than the US. There are also a few other Blu-ray sets that are non-region and also Asian cinema for under $10 via Blu-ray (also, non region from Showbox).
Also, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer and Melville sets are pretty cheap right now as well.
For those in the US…just remember that the price that you see will be cheaper once you add it to your cart because you won’t be charged VAT and usually takes a week to receive your product.
The 5 disc Collectors Edition of Blade Runners gotta be the best waste of time anyone can have!
Box sets occupy far too much of my time. Especially TV Box sets. The Wire. Sopranos. Lost. Curb. SImpsons. Mad Men. The list goes on and I wonder where the hell did my life go? I wonder.
