You can’t be serious…
I want to read EFE’s input on the new name. Then we’ll see. We certainly could create a new forum.
I’ve heard his input. He should have created MUBI as a totally different site. MUBI means man boobies. He wants to attract “millions”. The Auteurs wasn’t that kind of site to begin with. He is ruining this place.
“In other news: Mubi is going to make available on its site some 40 films of Agnes Varda. Other name directors who own the rights to their films will follow, Cakarel says—he’s already negotiating. " — That part of the article sounds nice. :)
i was just about to start this same thread, suggesting that we give it a week or some kind of deadline, and then remove ourselves. if efe can’t respond to the RESOUNDING, nearly UNANIMOUS objections, then he can keep his tasteless masses and the rest of us can go elsewhere.
friend me on FB, adding the message “boycott mubi” and let’s see if we can get together THE real AUTEURS.
Max, eh…… How much is he going to charge for it?
If you ask me it was way more than just the name that made this site so great and deciding to leave seems a tad silly. (no offense)
btw. I think I should let you know that Salem is not really the name I got from birth but actually a nickname. If you no longer want to be my friend I guess I can understand :(
Thanks, Elizabeth. Will do.
I don’t know… the article didn’t say.
If he’s smart, he’ll grandfather all of theauteurs users in for free and charge the “new” users. You know, the ones who are going to benefit from the name change…
I’ll be honest, I like this place. I like the set up. And my Watchlist and lists are too much work to just walk away from. I’ll miss you if you leave, Miss Allyson.
Ally, I hope you change your mind on this. I’m completely with you on the inane stupidity that is the MUBI name change. I’ll sign any petition there is to change it back. Taken as a whole, what makes this site great is still the intense, even heated, discussions, and the fact that so many film lovers are gathering and contributing. I’m worried about the MUBI thing too and if it really does change what the site is all about, then you may be onto something. Let’s not jump the gun. I’d like there to be at least one place where I can mention Masaki Kobayashi and not get blank stares.
Right, I’m with Brad. Let’s not jump into conclusions yet. Let’s fight this ridiculous name change instead.
Screw it, I’m on the Brad-wagon, too. Listen to the man!
i think it(changing name) is a sign that shows the future. maybe another IMDB!!!!!
In the meantime you can Facebook me, too. Just let me know you’re from theauteurs.
Vahid – another IMDB would suck. Why would we want another IMDB? We have one. Are you like paid to promote MUBI or something?
i fully support giving it some time to resolve. but too much in the world goes bad because people do not speak up. i can’t go along with this silently, and i don’t want to have anything to do with the “millions.”
I like the Facebook idea. Here’s mine.
no you misunderstood me i agree with you IMDB is Sucks i said it to do something against this strand
The fact that he hasn’t responded to the unanimous anti-Mubi mood shows to me that he doesn’t care, ironic that he’d risk losing all of us for some naive attempt to compete with other Social Networking sites, which wont work. I’m gonna leave soon too I think, I’ve only been here a month or so – I cannot be bothered to grow attached to this site just to have it get shittier and shittier. Just need to find a decent semi-similar website, I have my fingers crossed for the video games site I frequent (giantbomb.com) which is launching a separate film site soon, which should be cool it’ll be structured like an editable wiki page, so if they happen to have a clue about film I’ll go there.
I couldn’t care less about big brother facebook, about IMDb or hipster Life Cinematic forum, all I care about is this site, no matter what name you shall call it. Thank you very much.
What Grey Daisies said! ^^^^^^^^
This is pretentious nonsense. All of this over a name? I mean, let’s face it, “The Auteurs” wasn’t the greatest name to begin with, so I don’t get all the hoopla.
Sure, let’s all pack our bags because we don’t want to be part of the “millions.” I’m not a fan of the name “Mubi” either, but let’s not whiny children about it. You’ll still get your ice cream.
Well I like the forums and they’re soon going to be full of people who don’t understand what Auteur means, making the interesting thing about this site – the great film discussion – totally uninteresting. The focus on Auteur cinema will dwindle, as will the love of film that everyone clearly has on this site that is a fact that a name like MUBI suggests to us.

And what does “Auteur” mean, Allan?
I don’t think that’s important. It’s a word best left out of the English vocabulary (those quaint French folk can have it though), because it describes nothing but some detached ideal. Anyway, if “those people who don’t understand what Auteur means” do invade the site because of the new name (a very likely scenario I’ll grant you) wouldn’t it be nice to have some pioneers from the older version there to guide things along? Just a thought.
Hey kids.
They just changed the name.
AFAIK they are not charging, spamming, shoving ads down our throats, removing movies, etc.
What the hell is the big deal?
Am I missing something bigger here?
Because if everyone is getting their panties in a tizzy over JUST a name change you kids need to have a cocktail and get out some.
If I am wrong I apologize.
Thanks
“Well I like the forums and they’re soon going to be full of people who don’t understand what Auteur means, making the interesting thing about this site – the great film discussion – totally uninteresting.”
Personally I find all the complaining about the name rather uninteresting, Mubi is still the same amazing page it has been a week ago when it was still called the auteurs, really nothing has changed… The amazing user lists, the amazing database of films, the greatest film stills you will find online, The submission mechanism that allows us to contribute and the thoughtful topics started in the past are all still here.
Mubi will not be the next IMDb (and IMDb will never manage to be the next Mubi either)
While I understand and empathize with the anger and the frustration—I am even holding a one-man topless protest—I will not be boycotting this site. It is the only site of its kind in my opinion, and I will withhold judgment until the doom-and-gloom predictions are actually fulfilled.
Obviously, the new name is unlikely to be recalled, but what we can do is to demand that Efe and the site demonstrate their supposed dedication to the cinephile community. After all, it is only a name. And as the Bard says, What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
Right, this site doesn’t care about its users, right… In the last year it did not encourage the world cup with its own page and additions, even when we were watching largely illegally uploaded movies (some offered by the site itself)… or added the submission mechanism (which, I insist, meant a lot of crap like Top Gun and Rocky IV going into the database)… or lowered the price of movies to watch… or increased the number of movies available to watch (at least in my largely forgotten area of the world)… or generated a supremely valuable Garage section to show shorts made by users… no, this site’s managers don’t care at all!
This site is filled with a shitload of users, most of whom do not play a part in the forums but have equal access to movies and ads, which by the way, are sold based on number of users (exposition), not how cool a website is. There have been idiots for a while now in the forums, and mostly they fade away quickly or are effectively silenced by the high-brow elite. Moreover, this site has many tools that help being selective about which threads to follow: e-mail notifications about updates on threads, following selected people, a list of threads where one has made comments, etc.
Stop being such puerile victims and grow the fuck up, people! You expect a site which, according to the IW article, has been financially in the negative to not take measures just because a bunch of fragile, egocentric intellectuals feel threatened? Give me a fucking break!! I agree: the name sucks, but it’s just a goddamned name. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I certainly don’t want to become stupidly insulting to a site which I value greatly because of something so stupid a a name change (however ridiculous “MUBI” is for a name) and which other than that hasn’t done anything but improve itself on a continual basis FOR its users. That’s how I see it. All the whining I’ve been reading is pathetic.
Ally the Manic Listmaker
I’m sticking here for the Directors World Cup. Then let’s all add each other to FB and/or join another movie site or sites and let’s get the hell out of here before the tumbleweeds start rolling in.
